    We at Ethicon Surgical Robotics’ Strategic Development team are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to support Robotic System and Instrument development. The successful candidate is a highly motivated person who is passionate about advancing medical device technology and applying their knowledge to the field of robotics.

     

    You’ll be part of a fast-paced, dynamic environment within a multi-disciplinary team- focused on results and delivery of instrumentation that exceeds expectations of the customer. You will work hand in hand with clinical partners to define the requirements of next generation of robotic surgical instruments and with marketing partners to find the value that your team’s product brings to OR. You will lead projects, communicate within and across teams, as well as demonstrate and share your mechanical engineering knowledge to drive projects to completion. In addition to team collaboration, you'll also actively work on results-oriented individual projects within medical robotics.

     

    POSITION COMPONENTS

    • Collaborate with clinical teams to define and validate clinical requirements for new instrumentation and systems.
    • Design CAD models, fabricate drawings, and collaborate with vendors to produce prototype and production parts.
    • Build design solutions which utilize engineering methods with good documentation processes.
    • Apply engineering methodologies and in-depth understanding of technical design, to tackle clinical challenges.
    • Perform engineering analyses and relevant physical testing on designs.
    • Conduct pre-clinical evaluation of new product prototypes.
    • Apply knowledge of surgical procedures to establish models and experimental techniques to evaluate clinical performance.
    • Work with product management to identify unmet needs and define new solutions and value propositions.
    • Write protocols, conduct formal testing, and report results of engineering studies.
    • Assess and detail preliminary risks and hazards.
    • Work independently and in a team, while being flexible, self-motivated, curious and willing to redefine the world of medical robotics.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience working with teams across multiple engineering fields, including mechanical, software, electrical, clinical, and visual/industrial design.
    • Familiarity with motors, encoders, sensors, torque transfer, and robotic control basics.
    • Familiarity with human anatomy, physiology and/or surgical techniques.
    • Experience with a coding language or data processing program- i.e. Python, Matlab.
    • Experience with DFM/A and manufacturing processes including: machining, casting, stamping, forming, injection molding.
    • Experience in working with materials such as metals, plastics, and elastomers.
    • Experience with electromechanical interfaces and/or data transfer.
    • Experience with medical devices in a pre-clinical setting.
    • Experience in the regulated medical device environment preferred, including document control processes, document approval processes, study archiving, data collection and phase/design reviews.
