The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a comprehensive unit licensed for 76 neonatal beds. The NICU provides regional high-risk neonatal services and is designated as a subspecialty level IV newborn service by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the state of Virginia. This NICU is recognized as a Best Practice Benchmark Site by the Vermont Oxford Neonatal Network for “outstanding dedication, commitment and contributions . . . to the care of newborns and their families.”
In August 2011 and again in August 2013, the NICU was awarded the Gold Seal of Approval by The Joint Commission as a Center of Excellence in the Care of the Premature Infant.
As the region's only American Academy of Pediatrics Level IV NICU, we serve as a regional resource for the most premature and sick newborns. We are the nationally recognized for the care we provide - we have been ranked for consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report Best Children's Hospitals in Neonatology and were first in the nation to receive the Joint Commission's Gold Seal for the Care of the Premature Infants.
