Our summer internship program provides students with a fun yet rewarding experience through hands-on research and numerous opportunities to network with other interns as well as employees in the organization.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract with symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding and weight loss. It includes two major conditions, ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). Histology (microscopic examination of intestinal biopsies obtained through colonoscopy) has become a key assessment of disease activity, as it reflects the fundamental disease process at specific intestinal locations. This internship is within the Immunology Biomarkers department and requires a motivated and intellectually curious individual to support efforts to apply artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) approaches to analysis of digital images of intestinal biopsies of human subjects.

The Summer Intern will:

• Annotate digital images of intestinal biopsies with appropriate clinical and technical metadata
• Process digital images and assess their quality
• Apply previously developed AI/ML algorithms to collections of images and assess their performance
• Contribute towards development of new algorithms, approaches and workflows for processing and analysis of digital images of intestinal biopsies

QUALIFICATIONS

• Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited university pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Systems Biology, Bioinformatics, or other relevant field.
• Proficiency in Python or R programming language is required.
• Familiarity with data analysis and machine learning tools and frameworks (e.g. Scikit learn, TensorFlow, Caffe, PyTorch, Pylearn2, etc.) is preferred.
• Familiarity with cloud computing in the context of data science is preferred.
• Candidates must be available to work full-time during the internship.
• Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and not require sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g. H1-B status) now or in the future. 
• Candidates must have the ability to work individually (independently) as well as on a team.
• Candidates must be detail-oriented, highly organized and able to manage multiple tasks.
• A minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 is strongly preferred.
