Description The Nurse Residency program is an evidence-based platform which has been implemented to support registered nurses with less than 1 year of acute care experience as they transition into the role of a professional nurse. Course content and curriculum is based upon recommendations of the National League of Nursing (NLN), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), and the American Nurses Association (ANA) and various peer-reviewed articles. The residency is then tailored specifically to the culture of Salem Health. Format The Nurse Residency program is a formal 6 month professional development course. It begins with initial orientation and training, and proceeds to monthly meetings. These meetings arefour (4)hours in length with varied topics geared toward the high-level professional development of an entry-level registered nurse. These are not unit-specific education courses. Each course is presented by content expert(s) in an interactive manner and for some courses, pre-coursework may be involved to better prepare residents to apply the content. Minimum Qualifications Include: New Grads (External Candidates): -Requires BSN or non-nursing Bachelors Degree with MSN. Bachelor of Arts in Nursing also accepted. -Will consider new Chemeketa ADN graduate if already licensed as RN and enrolled in LinfieldsADN to BSN program with designated completion date. Must sign agreement to complete BSN within two(2)years of hire. New Grads (Existing Employees): -Will consider new ADN graduate if enrolled in an accreditedADN to BSN program and agrees to completion of BSN within two (2) years. Assesses patient/family education needs and learning readiness level, and uses appropriate language and terminology. Repeats instructions often if needed. INTERVENTION A. Demonstrates competency in delivery of care based on the patient care plan. Performs nursing skills following Salem Health policies and procedures utilizing appropriate resources. Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific behaviors when caring for patients. Such as: -Involves family or designated caregiver with care -Encourage self-care -Assists patient to plan for anticipated body changes -Assists, when appropriate, reminiscing about events B. Prioritizes care based on patients current needs. Proactive in preventing adverse outcomes and hospital-associated conditions. Demonstrates follow-through in the completion of patient care. C. Intervenes appropriately in emergency situations. PLAN A. Initiates and/or reviews appropriate plan of care with patient/family to address holistic age-specific needs and reflect the patients changing condition. B. Develops a plan of treatment based on the patients rehabilitation potential, rehabilitation barriers, objective findings, cultural, social, medical and developmental backgrounds. C. Plans for the transfer/discharge of the patient to the next appropriate level of care in the continuum and is proactive in working with other members of the health care team and/or family as appropriate. Working Conditions Include: Standing, moving about work area, lift & carry 1-10 pounds, walk-level surface, use of arms/wrist, & manual dexterity (grasping/squeezing).
