Provides and coordinates language interpretation between patient, family and health care provider(s). CORE JOB FUNCTIONS: Provides clear, accurate, impartial and timely language interpretation between English and other languages to facilitate medically necessary communication between patient, family and health care provider. Department hours of operation are 24/7 to coincide with hospital need. Coordinates interpreting services for other languages including American Sign Language (ASL); includes communication with community-based contracted language providers. Establishes priority when dealing with simultaneous requests for service to meet patient care needs. Utilizes best practices when working with LEP patients of all ages, gender identity/sexual orientation, minority groups/cultures, language barriers and physical & cognitive status as they relate to communication needs. Educate Salem Health staff and advance systems to improve practices in working with LEP patients. Maintains open, polite and collegial communication with Salem Health colleagues to improve practice. Actively engages in productivity goals to ensure timely patient access to needed language (including in-person or remote interpretation). Leads and completes unit-based improvement projects utilizing Lean methods and tools. Interpreter may need to translate patient discharge instructions and other simple written documents to facilitate urgent patient care needs. Able to utilize computer based dispatching system, web-based scheduling, and electronic medical record. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: High school graduate or GED required. Academic training in foreign language preferred. EXPERIENCE: Formal interpreting experience required or the completion of a state approved health care interpreter training course within one (1) year of hire. Health care experience desirable, particularly medical terminology. LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Currently certified or have the ability to obtain (within one (1) year of hire) Oregon State Health Care Interpreter Certification, AND national medical/healthcare interpreter certification from certifying entities. Required to complete all necessary education and processes to maintain certification. Some assignments require current Oregon drivers license, dependable automobile and current personal auto insurance coverage. SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Abides by Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for medical interpreters. Ability to readily educate hospital staff on obligation to provide meaningful, competent and impartial access to health care (rationale for avoiding ad-hoc interpreters, Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) standard mandates and Title VI national origin discrimination). WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequent and/or constant physical requirements include: standing, moving about the work area, walking on a level-surface, climbing stairs and keyboard operation. Language ability: To read, write, and speak English and target language proficiently.
