    GENERAL SUMMARY

    As part of his/her academic experience, the Research Intern will assist with various activities to support an engineering team. Responsibilities may include programming routines in Python that work with SQL databases, fabricating and testing electronics components, performing basic design calculations, administrative duties, and literature searches.

    LAB SPECIFIC DESCRIPTION

    Center for Bionic Medicine- Improving prosthetic and rehabilitation technology through the development and testing of novel devices and technologies. Specific project involvement would include working with a prosthetic leg during various ambulation tasks. Physiological parameters such as metabolic cost, muscle activation patterns, and joint torques will be measured to determine whether the leg improves performance. Data obtained will be used to further improve the device. 

    PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    THE RESEARCH INTERN WILL SUPPORT RESEARCH PROJECTS BY ASSISTING WITH ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES:

    1. Developing and refining programs in Python or MATLAB
    2. Fabricating and testing wiring harnesses and populating PCBs
    3. Generating PCB layouts
    4. Ordering parts
    5. Fabrication and testing of design prototypes
    6. Construction of data tables, figures and preparation of materials for presentations
    7. Assisting with data analysis
    8. Conducting literature searches, copying and distributing articles as appropriate.
    9. General administrative tasks, including the organization and inventory management of related lab spaces
    10. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

    1. Reports directly to the Research Scientist, Principal Investigator, or Engineering Manager, but may be additionally directly mentored by an engineer, post-doc, or grad student, depending on department structure.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

    1. Communication and relevant engineering analysis skills normally acquired through college-level coursework.
    2. Software development experience, preferably in Python and MATLAB.
    3. Basic soldering abilities.
    4. Ability to accurately review and enter project data.
    5. Interpersonal skills needed to interact effectively with patients, physicians and all Institute staff as well as to effectively work with supervisors from various research projects.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Undergraduate student finishing or entering their Sophomore or Junior.
    2. GPA above 2.50.
    3. Personal accountability, a strong work ethic and professional demeanor.
