    The Research Speech and Language Pathologist will follow a research protocol to evaluate and treat speech and language problems in adults with neurologic communication disorders.

    The Research Speech and Language Pathologist will demonstrate Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Core Attributes: Communication, Accountability, Flexibility/Adaptability, Judgment/Problem Solving, Customer Service and Core Values (Hope, Compassion, Discovery, Collaboration, and Commitment to Excellence) while fulfilling job duties.

     

     

    THE RESEARCH SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST WILL:

     

    1. Participate in research activities for funded and non-funded projects, with a primary emphasis on aphasia.
    2. Participate in obtaining informed consent.
    3. Administer a battery of assessment instruments according to specific research protocols.
    4. Score, transcribe, code, and interpret test data.
    5. Administer treatment procedures according to a research protocol.
    6. Track subject performance during treatment.
    7. Enter data and assists with various record-keeping tasks and data management.
    8. Have potential for initiation of own clinical research questions and analysis and interpretation of data to answer these questions.
    9. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

     

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

    1. Reports directly to the Research Scientist or Principal Investigator.

     

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    1. Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.

    Required Skills Required Experience

     

     

    1. Knowledge in diagnoses and types of treatment for speech, language, swallowing and behavior problems of neurologically impaired at a level generally acquired through completion of a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from a program accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Ph.D. preferred.
    2. Current Illinois license as Speech-language Pathologist.
    3. Current Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
    4. Current CPR certification.
    5. Minimum 2 years of experience necessary in order to gain full knowledge of Speech/language techniques and objectives. Previous experience working with individuals with aphasia desired.
    6. Analytical ability to prepare reports, maintain data inventory, code, transcribe interviews, develop graphs, perform literature searches, negotiate systems in several hospitals and/or human service organizations, and identify concerns/responses of participants that require termination of interview or possible intervention.
    7. Strong interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients/family member dyads, physicians, other human service professionals and a variety of supervisors for various research projects.
    8. Flexibility to coordinate scheduling with other project staff.
    9. Proficient typing and administrative skills to transcribe data, prepare correspondence, and maintain files.
