    GENERAL SUMMARY

     

    Public Safety is responsible for maintaining a secure environment at the front line of service. To ensure that patients, employees, visitors, and guests are served and protected and that all contents and assets of SRAlab are secured and that potentially harmful, dangerous or unsafe situations or conditions are anticipated and addressed.

     

    Consistently demonstrates support of the SRAlab statement of Mission and Philosophy by striving for excellence, contributing to the team efforts and showing respect and compassion for patients and their families, fellow employees, and all others with whom there is contact at or in the interest of SRAlab.

     

    PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    THE PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER WILL:

     

    1. Patrols assigned areas, searching for fire or other safety hazards, presence of unauthorized persons or other potential sources of crime or harm to persons or property.
    2. Maintains secure facilities, ensuring entrances are locked as required, controlling authorized access to rooms and offices, removing loiterers and unruly persons and so forth.
    3. Responds according to procedures to burglar, robbery and fire alarms, disturbances, suspicious persons, accidents, various public service calls and other miscellaneous incidents.
    4. Intervenes as necessary to confront and restrain hostile and abusive persons in a manner necessary to reduce risk of personal injury or disruption of Institute operations.
    5. Conducts preliminary investigation on complaints, incidents and accidents. Prepares written reports on activities and investigations.
    6. Enforces all hospital safety and security rules and regulations as required including but not limited to smoking and parking policies.
    7. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of SRAlab.

     

     

    OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    1. Responsible for maintaining departmental equipment in good repair. Up keep of uniform and accessories, maintain current, valid Illinois Driver’s license. Must complete all required training.
    2. Assists patients, visitors and staff by providing directions and general information, helping them from/to/into/out of vehicles/wheelchairs/ carts/etc., giving assistance to stalled vehicles, and so forth.
    3. Assists and escorts patients, visitors and employees to parking areas
    4. Assists as needed to traffic control in the Main Driveway or in the parking garage
    5. Performs routine safety cleaning/maintenance and schedule reservation for use of vehicles.
    6. Transports prescriptions, blood gases, patient stats, doctors’ orders, etc., as needed.
    7. Ensures wheelchair availability for outpatients and visitors.

     

     

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

     

     

    1. Reports to Security Director.

     

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

     

    1. Must be able to read and write to conduct investigations and complete reports and must be able to deal effectively with people at a level generally acquired through completion of a high school diploma.
    2. High School Diploma or equivalent education, 3-4 years of security experience or an associate’s degree in criminal justice or a related field preferred or Military experience
    3. Knowledge of security procedures, investigation techniques and reporting and public safety rules and codes. Three to six month’s orientation to acquire necessary familiarity with SRAlab policies and procedures.
    4. Must have interpersonal skills necessary to provide courteous assistance to employees, visitors, and staff and to confront and control potentially hostile persons.
    5. Must be capable of providing effective assistance in restraining abusive or hostile persons.
    6. Ability to transfer patients from vehicle to wheelchairs, consistent with lifting up to 35 lbs.
    7. Analytical ability to utilize Outlook, Cerner, Informacast, and C-Cure systems
    8. Knowledge of proper body mechanics for transferring patients into and out of vehicles.
    9. Public Safety Officers are required to have a minimum of 20 Hours Training as outlined by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. Certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Illinois waives this requirement.
    10. Public Safety Officers are required to have a valid State of Illinois Drivers License and a clean MVR record free from moving violations. If at any time during the course of employment, the employee loses driving privileges due to expiration, suspension, revocation etc. he/she must not operate any SRAlab Vehicles and must notify the Director of Security Immediately of the situation.

     

     

     

    WITHIN THE FIRST 12 MONTHS OF EMPLOYMENT

     

    1. Public Safety Officers are required to complete and be certified in IAHSS Basic Course. SRAlab will provide training book and test.

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS

     

    1. Position is subject to work weekends and holidays.
    2. Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
    3. Ability to climb, walk, run, and stand or sit for long periods.
    4. Occasional risks to personal safety when confronting and restraining individuals.
