    ABOUT THE SHIRLEY RYAN AFFECTIVE & EMOTIONAL REHABILITATION

     

    We are a rehabilitation research lab led by Dr. Sameer Ashaie located in Think and Speak at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. The primary focus of our lab is investigating mood disturbances in persons with stroke including those with stroke aphasia.  The secondary focus of our lab is in using network analysis to understand the complex interplay between factors such as different depression symptoms and social participation in a variety of rehabilitation populations (e.g., stroke and traumatic brain injury).  

     

    Shirley Ryan Affective and Emotion Rehabilitation (SAfER) Lab

     

    RESEARCH INTERN DESCRIPTION

     

    As part of the academic experience, the Research Intern will assist with various activities to support an engineering team.  Responsibilities will align with the successful candidate’s field of study and may include: generating CAD models, programming routines in Python, performing data analysis, fabricating and testing prototypes and associated electronics, performing design calculations, completion of administrative duties, and undertaking literature searches.

     

    Responsibilities may include programming routines in Python that work with SQL databases, fabricating and testing electronics components, performing basic design calculations, administrative duties, and literature searches.

     

    The Research Intern will consistently demonstrate support of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab statement of Vision, Mission, and Core Values by striving for excellence, contributing to the team efforts, and showing respect and compassion for patients and their families, fellow employees, and all others with whom there is contact at or in the interest of the SRALab.

    THE RESEARCH INTERN WILL SUPPORT RESEARCH PROJECTS BY ASSISTING WITH ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES: 

     

    1. Modeling of parts and ass Modeling of parts and assemblies in CAD
    2. Generating drawings for prototypes
    3. Ordering parts
    4. Fabrication and testing of design prototypes
    5. Developing and refining programs in Python or MATLAB
    6. Fabricating and testing wiring harnesses and populating PCBs
    7. Generating PCB layouts
    8. Construction of data tables and figures, as well as preparation of materials for presentations
    9. Assisting with data analysis
    10. Conducting literature searches, copying, and distributing articles as appropriate.
    11. General administrative tasks, including organization and inventory management of related lab spaces
    12. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab

     

     

    Reporting Relationships

    • Reports directly to the Research Scientist, Principal Investigator or Project Manager, but may be additionally mentored by a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow, depending on department structure.

     

     

    Working Conditions

     

    • Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.

     

    Required Skills Required Experience

     

    • Communication and mathematics skills normally acquired through college-level coursework.
    • Familiarity with medical terminology.
    • Ability to accurately review and enter project data.
    • Analytical ability required to prepare reports, maintains data inventory, and perform literature searches.
    • Ability to strictly adhere to an approved written protocol.
    • Interpersonal skills needed to interact effectively with patients, physicians and all Institute staff as well as to effectively work with supervisors from various research projects.
