GENERAL SUMMARY
Patrols assigned areas to detect and deter crime and other potential
harm to employees, visitors, staff and Institute property. Provides
information and assistance to employees, visitors and staff. Write
detailed incident reports as required.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Patrols assigned areas, searching for fire or other safety hazards,
presence of unauthorized persons or other potential sources of crime
or harm to persons or property.
- Maintains secure facilities, ensuring entrances are locked as
required, controlling authorized access to rooms and offices,
removing loiterers and unruly persons and so forth.
- Responds according to procedures to burglar, robbery and fire
alarms, disturbances, suspicious persons, accidents, various public
service calls and other miscellaneous incidents.
- Intervenes as necessary to confront and restrain hostile and abusive
persons in a manner necessary to reduce risk of personal injury or
disruption of Institute operations.
- Conducts preliminary investigation on complaints, incidents and
accidents. Prepares written reports on activities
and investigations.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists patients, visitors and staff by providing directions and
general information, helping them from/to/into/out of
vehicles/wheelchairs/ carts/etc. and giving assistance to stalled
vehicles, unlocking vehicles and so forth.
- Assists and escorts patients, visitors and employees to parking
areas, anywhere within McGaw Medical Center Complex; escorts medical
staff transferring patients to NMH.
- Is assigned as needed to traffic control, which requires vehicle
parking on the east and west sides of the Institute.
- Performs routine safety cleaning/maintenance and, using RICIS,
utilization scheduling for Institute vehicles.
- Monitors patient day and overnight passes on RICIS.
- Transports patients, prescriptions, blood gases, patient stats,
doctors’ orders, etc, as needed.
- Transfers RICIS tapes off-site daily.
- Ensures wheelchair availability for outpatients and visitors.
- Secures and releases patient valuables.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to Security Supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Must be able to read and write to conduct investigations and
complete reports and must be able to deal effectively with people at
a level generally acquired through completion of a high
school diploma.
- Knowledge of security procedures, investigation techniques and
reporting and public safety rules and codes at a level generally
acquired through one to two years related experience or equivalent
education and training in law enforcement. Three to six months
orientation to acquire necessary familiarity with McGaw Medical
center/Institute locations, policies and procedures. Valid driver’s
license and good driving record is required.
- Must have interpersonal skills necessary to provide courteous
assistance to employees, visitors, and staff and to confront and
control potentially hostile persons.
- Must be capable of providing effective assistance in restraining
abusive or hostile persons. On occasion work requires transfers of
patients from vehicle to wheelchairs.
- Analytical ability to successfully complete training for RICIS,
Q-Straints and proper body mechanics for transferring patients into
and out of vehicles.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Depending on area assigned, may be exposed to all
weather conditions.
- Occasional risks to personal safety when confronting and
restraining individuals.
