  • Responsibilities

    GENERAL SUMMARY

     

    Under close supervision and following prescribed procedures, the Rehabilitation Technician assists patients and patient care team in preparing for and performing treatment programs and provision of basic day care support of significant others.  Maintains department facilities and patient care areas and equipment including patient wheelchairs and positioning equipment daily in a clean and orderly condition.

    PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    1. Prepares patients for treatments or evaluation, assisting them as necessary to undress and don garments or treatment aids.  Ensures patients are in proper and comfortable position for assigned therapy procedure.
    2. Transfers, moves, and ambulates patients to and from department with wheelchair or stretcher in a safe manner as requested by therapist.
    3. Assists therapist in direct patient care activities such as sensory stimulation, training programs, gait training, etc.  Assists with maximizing patient's ability to function (improve ADL independence and mobility, promote positive self-image and communicating skills) by utilizing compensatory strategies (i.e., for sensory loss, cognitive and perceptual deficits) as suggested by the therapist.
    4. Assists therapist in patient care during group or supervised treatment sessions such exercise and weight training programs, hydrotherapy, and gait training.
    5. Carries out the therapeutic regime for specific patients as assigned and demonstrates competency in understanding the growth and development of adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients as measured by specific performance standards and as described by department/unit policies and procedures. 
    6. Reinforces previous learning in self-care activities such as feeding, dressing, bathing and memory training.
    7. Observes patients and reports reactions or changes in condition immediately to supervising nurse or therapist.
    8. Fabricates equipment adaptations for patient's using sewing materials and small hand tools.
    9. Maintains adaptive equipment inventory including issuing supplies to staff and notifying appropriate personnel of deficiencies.
    10. Maintains clinic area in a neat organized manner and performs infection control procedures including disinfecting equipment.
    11. Maintains food inventory for patient use including shopping for needed supplies, dating, and rotating current supply.
    12. Performs clerical support when needed including reception duties, file maintenance, document distribution, library maintenance and retrieval of medical records.
    13. Maintains appropriate inventory of supplies and equipment including documentation of usage and replenishment.
    14. Clean and maintain Shirley Ryan Abilitylab rental wheelchairs.
    15. Delivers/stores supplies and equipment received from Central Supply.
    16. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of Shirley Ryan Abilitylab.

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

     

    Reports to assigned Nurse Manager or Manager, Allied Health

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

     

    1. High school diploma or equivalent education.
    2. Knowledge of patient care methods procedures and techniques usually acquired by one to two years experience as a physical therapy aide, occupational therapy aide, or related health care experience.
    3. Communicates effectively using timely verbal, non-verbal and written communication.
    4. Proactively takes ownership for serving the customer, team, and organization for achieving goals and for resolving problems. 
    5. Willingly adapts to changing work demands and work environment.
    6. Demonstrates critical thinking skills and makes sound judgments to monitor and respond to patient needs or changes in condition.
    7. Anticipates assesses and addresses the needs of patients, internal and external customers to positively influence the patient/customer experience (directly or indirectly).
    8. Ability to transfer and position patients, consistent with lifting up to 35 lbs.

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS

     

    1. Normal patient care environment with little or no exposure to dust, noise or extreme temperature.
    2. Exposure to moderately adverse working conditions in performing certain patient care activities.
    3. Occasional exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients.
