    GENERAL SUMMARY

    The Research Physical Therapist will follow a research protocol to evaluate and treat patients with a variety of disabilities, including motor, neurological and musculoskeletal problems, amputations, etc. in adults.

    The Research Physical Therapist will consistently demonstrate support of the Shirley Ryan Abilitylab statement of Vision, Mission and Core Values by striving for excellence, contributing to the team efforts and showing respect and compassion for patients and their families, fellow employees, and all others with whom there is contact at or in the interest of the institute.

    PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    THE RESEARCH PHYSICAL THERAPIST WILL:

    1. Participate in research activities for funded and non-funded projects. 
    2. Participate in obtaining informed consent.
    3. Administer a battery of assessment instruments according to specific research protocols. 
    4. Score, transcribe, code, and interpret test data. 
    5. Administer treatment procedures according to a research protocol. 
    6. Track subject performance during treatment. 
    7. Enter data and assists with various record-keeping tasks and data management. 
    8. Initiate clinical research questions and analyze and interpret data to answer these questions.
    9. Liaise with sponsor for technical or equipment malfunctions, updates and maintenance.
    10. Present information on research findings and Shirley Ryan Abilitylab presence in the research community to audiences within Shirley Ryan Abilitylab and at outside conferences and academic meetings.
    11. Participate in developing and maintaining grant applications and supporting documentation for submission to the IRB.  Report relevant research findings to IRB.
    12. Perform other research-related duties as assigned.

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

    1. Reports directly to the Research Scientist, Principal Investigator or Lab Manager.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

     

    1. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and physical therapy treatments and modalities at a level normally acquired through completion of Doctoral degree from an accredited school of physical therapy.
    2. Must be licensed to practice in the State of Illinois.
    3. Approximately three to six months on-the-job experience necessary to gain full knowledge of physical therapy techniques and objectives to develop and administer treatment programs.
    4. Current CPR certification required.
    5. Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with physicians, patients and families in providing therapy and exchanging patient progress/condition information and to assign duties and orient/train subordinate professional, technical and support personnel.
    6. Analytical ability necessary for determining priorities, providing input regarding the development of departmental policies, procedures and budgets, evaluating new supplies and developing and assessing new programs and recommending changes.
    7. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when administering treatments, observing patients and maintaining records.
    8. Ability to lift 20 to 50 pounds occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds frequently to transfer and position patients.
