SHIRLEY RYAN ABILITYLAB - MOTION ANALYSIS TECHNICAL SPECIALIST
GENERAL SUMMARY The Motion Analysis Technical Specialist performs motion analysis and clinical gait analysis evaluations which include data collection, interpretation of patient data, and report generation. Supports all aspects of clinical research projects related to the analysis of normal and pathological gait patterns. Engages in laboratory educational efforts which include instructional lectures, resident in-services, and clinical tutorials. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepares and evaluates patients according to established protocols, physician prescriptions, and clinic notes
Collects electromyographic, kinetic, kinematic, and foot pressure data
Performs initial interpretation of patient data
Confers with physical therapist regarding the physical examination and observational gait analysis
Reviews patient data with physician and gait analysis team to determine treatment recommendations. Prepares final report incorporating information from all sources
Dictates, edits, and ensures proper distribution of clinical reports
Implements and assists with research projects. Compiles research data and reports results in the form of conference abstracts, podium and poster presentations, and scientific journal submissions
Troubleshoots computer and equipment problems and patient data for errors in collection and processing prior to review of data. Arranges for repairs when necessary. Confers with other Motion Analysis Center staff and the Motion Analysis Center Administrator regarding equipment or data problems when necessary
Maintains the storage of patient and clinical research data.
Performs duties of the gait analysis laboratory technician, patient assessment/interaction, and maintenance of patient/department records
Explains procedures to the patient and families. Addresses questions from patients, families, physicians, insurance companies, and hospital staff. Assists manager with precertification of benefits with third party payors as needed
Prepares in-services and lectures for medical students, residents, research fellows, physicians, physical therapists, engineers, and other rehabilitation clinicians. Participates in the organization and instruction of courses offered by the gait lab
Assists gait analysis laboratory administrator in determining equipment needs and researching equipment and vendors. Confers with other Motion Analysis Center staff and the Motion Analysis Center Administrator when necessary

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Associate Director, Clinical Motion Analysis laboratory
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED
Bachelor of Science in kinesiology or biomedical engineering with strong background in biomechanics is required. Master of Science in kinesiology with strong background in biomechanics strongly preferred
Experience working with children and adults with neuromuscular disabilities and the treatment approaches available for these patients is highly desired
Previous exposure to the techniques involved in kinematic, kinetic, and electromyographic data collection, the interpretation of pathological and normal gait analysis data, and ability to effectively communicate with laboratory staff, physicians, and research project investigators
Computer literacy, including ability to work in Windows environment, is required. Ability to assist/lift patients weighing 5 to 120 lbs. (or more with assistance) up onto or down from examination table and/or physically assist subjects to and from starting location.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the ages served on the assigned unit/department
WORKING CONDITIONS
General laboratory setting with potential machine shop exposure
Fabrication and assembly area with occasional exposure to loud noises, unpleasant odors and dust. Appropriate personal protective gear and environmental systems are provided
Ability to move equipment and materials as needed
