    Job Description

    Overview

    Provides functional direction for specified laboratory areas, functional domains, and clinical sections. Actively participates in the financial, physical and human resources allocation and utilization in collaboration with the administrative laboratory director and/or medical director as appropriate.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Performs personnel functions, including interviewing, hiring, evaluations, training, counseling, scheduling and discipline in conjunction with the administrative director.
    2. Works with other UMMS laboratories to develop regional and site-specific procedures. Ensures that all areas of the laboratory, both technical and non-technical, maintain compliance with all regulations and standard operating procedures required by all appropriate regulatory agencies.
    3. May participate in UMMS laboratory system groups.
    4. Represents the laboratory on appropriate hospital groups and committees as required.
    5. Assists the administrative laboratory director in the development and ongoing operations of the laboratory outreach program, if applicable.
    6. Develops and maintains an ongoing customer feedback process to ensure market retention and internal and external customer satisfaction.
    7. Participates in the review, development, and implementation of new tests, including the cost analysis of current and proposed test procedures.
    8. Ensures a safe working environment and that staff are aware and adhere to the safety policies and procedures, especially the hospital’s Universal Precautions and Blood-Borne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan response for disasters and emergencies.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry or equivalent is required. Advanced coursework/education is preferred. ASCP or equivalent preferred.

    Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of direct laboratory experience is required. Must meet applicable federal, state, local, and College of American Pathologists (CAP) professional requirements as a general supervisor.
