    Charge Nurse Night Shift OB The charge nurse provides leadership and management during their assigned shift. Acts in the Managers or Assistant Managers absence to ensure the department functions appropriately. The charge nurse manages the flow of patients through the department ensuring excellent nursing care, cost- effective use of material and human resources. The charge nurse also provides individualized goal-directed nursing care based on knowledge of basic competencies in the fundamentals of nursing and pharmacology from admission to discharge. The charge nurse has knowledge of standards of care, nursing assessment and pharmacology including doses, purpose, interactions, side effects and reactions to medications. In addition, the charge nurse completes the monthly staffing schedule for his/her shift and assists the manager with hiring, evaluation of staff, disciplinary actions, and reward and recognition of staff. The charge nurse ensures competent care is provided to patients of all ages from geriatric to neonatal and a variety of illnesses and injuries encountered in the Nursing Department setting, including but not limited to, cardiac, trauma, neurological and psychological diseases. The charge nurse anticipates & recognizes potential problems & intervenes appropriately. The charge nurse assists the Department Manager and/or Assistant Manager with compliance to department policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory agencies, hospital bylaws, and professional practice standards. The charge nurse, as assigned, participates in appropriate medical staff and other internal committees within the hospital, within the Sutter Health System and represents STCH and the Sutter System within the community. Actively participates in professional growth opportunities & provides high quality customer relations utilizing excellent interpersonal & communication skills. The charge nurse will maintain competency in BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support). S/he will complete yearly department and hospital competencies (i.e. PALS, NRP, fetal monitoring or other specific training required for the assigned department). The charge nurse serves as a consultant, advisor, and as needed, a resource for clinical problems and unit operations. S/he intervenes in conflict resolution/bed shortages, notifies the manager of potential or actual problems and ensures the safety of staff, patient and visitor. S/he also provides individualized nursing process through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the bio-physical and psychosocial needs of the patients. The charge nurse assists the Department Manager and/or Assistant Manager to prepare, conduct, and evaluate continuous quality improvement and risk management activities within the Nursing department and hospital to ensure beneficial outcomes. The charge nurse in the evaluation, development, recommendation and implementation of short and long-term goals, program function and activities in the assigned areas within the scope of the hospitals mission and strategic objectives. The charge nurse actively participates in chart review, policy/procedure review and revision, lead/participate on unit committees, and participates and promotes Employee Opinion of Work activities. S/he serves as a preceptor/competency evaluator and provides feedback to the manager and assistant manager. The charge nurse is responsible for assisting the Department Manager and assistant manager in providing cost efficient, customer focused services through the proper use of the facilities, supplies, equipment, and human resources. They communicate in a courteous manner using AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explain) model when answering and prioritizing telephone calls and respond positively to, nursing, physician, patient, family and visitor requests. A full-service acute care facility serving the residents of Tracy for over 60 years, Sutter Tracy Community Hospital (STCH) has a total of 82 inpatient beds. STCH provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services including: a 24-hour emergency department, inpatient and ambulatory surgical services, endoscopy lab, intensive care, diagnostic imaging, laboratory and rehabilitation services including physical, speech and occupational therapy. STCH also has specialized care for Hemodialysis, Family Birthing Center, Continence Center and a Pain Management Center. For more information about Sutter Tracy Community Hospital, please visit **** MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California. * Greater than one (1) year of working experience in a similar unit with comparable patient acuity. * Must possess a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification * Must possess a current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (see department specific requirements). * Must possess a current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (see department specific requirements). * Must demonstrate critical thinking skills. * Demonstrates in depth knowledge of nursing process in addressing physical, psychosocial, and psychological needs of patients. * Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of unit specific age criteria for patient population. * Timely completion of unit specific orientation and competencies. * Ability to read, write, hear and verbally communicate in English to the degree required to perform the job. * Must be able to travel in accordance with any requirements of your job (if STCH and/or own vehicle used on STCH business, must possess valid California driver's license and upon request proof of liability insurance). * Must also meet department specific requirements for License and Certification (see Department Specific Requirements Below). PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN). * National certification in area of specialty. * Current Electrocardiogram (EKG) certification. * Current Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification.
