    GENERAL SUMMARY 

    Under direct supervision, provides care to patients with disabling conditions of limbs and spine by fitting and preparing devices known as orthoses, under the direction of and in consultation with a physician.

    PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

    1. Responsible for providing care to patients with disabling conditions of the limbs and spine through the following:
    •  
      • Examines and evaluates patient's orthotic needs in relation to disease entity and functional loss.
      • Demonstrates competency in understanding the growth and development of infant, child, adolescent and geriatric patients as measured by specific performance standards and as described by department/unit policies and procedures.  Demonstrates the ability to interpret growth and development related information to ensure patient needs are met.
      • Formulates design of orthosis including selecting materials, making case measurements and designing model modifications and layouts.
      • Performs fitting, including static and dynamic alignments.
      • Evaluates orthosis on patient and makes adjustments to ensure proper fit, function, cosmesis and quality of work.
      • Instructs patients and family in orthosis use and care.
      • Maintains patient records and progress notes.

         2.  Evaluates patient progress and maintains patient records.

         3.  Responsible for keeping current and up-to-date regarding new technology in the field of orthotics.

         4.  Monitors the work of technicians and residents in activities related to the development of orthoses.

         5.  Uses Cerner to perform job duties as needed. 

    OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES 

    1. Presents two case presentations in the course of his/her one year cycle.
    2. Participate in the review of two peer journal articles.
    3. Responsible for completion of a “Resident Directed Study” to be approved by preceptor and the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE).
    4. Responsible for maintaining a log of anonymous patient statistics for completion of quarterly and year-end NCOPE Residency Performance evaluation.

     

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS 

    1. Reports to Director, P & O Education
    2. Direct supervision by Certified Orthotist during focused rotation.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED 

    1. Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or Certificate in Orthotics from Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited college or university is required.
    2. Analytical ability is required to gather information from patient evaluations and recommend solutions to technical and administrative problems.
    3. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with patients and staff regarding fabrication of equipment.
    4. Ability to move casts.

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS 

    1. Normal patient care environment with exposure to dust, loud noises, offensive odors, and fumes.
    2. Some exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients.
    3. May include exposure to community, home, work, school and off-site clinic settings.
