    GENERAL SUMMARY 

    Under general supervision, plans, coordinates and facilitates a program of recreation services in order to assist patients in recovering from or adjusting to disability.  The Recreation Therapist provides recreational resources and opportunities in order to improve health and well being.  Also, confers with physician and interdisciplinary team in treatment planning.

    Recreation Therapist consistently demonstrates support of the RIC statement of Vision, Mission and Core Values by striving for excellence, contributing to the team efforts and showing respect and compassion for patients and their families, fellow employees, and all others with whom there is contact at or in the interest of the institute.

    Recreation Therapist demonstrates RIC Core Attributes: Communication, Accountability, Flexibility/Adaptability, Judgment/Problem Solving, Customer Service and RIC Values (Hope, Compassion, Discovery, Collaboration, & Commitment to Excellence) while fulfilling job duties.

    PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Functions as an active member of the rehabilitation team.  Communicates with physician, clinical team members and patient/family in order to share information which may assist in achieving optimum care for patient.
    2. Assesses patient’s leisure interests and abilities and implements an individualized treatment plan.  Services are appropriate for the age and development of the patient and demonstrates competency in understanding the growth and development of the patient and demonstrates competency in understanding the growth and development of child, adolescent and geriatric patients.
    3. Maintains current written documentation on patients receiving treatment services.
    4. Plans, coordinates and facilitates a well-balanced variety of innovative recreation programs that relate to patients’ interests. Coordinates volunteers for programs as appropriate.
    5. Plans, coordinates and facilitates community out-trip programs.  Transports patients in the community as needed.
    6. Maintains and enhances professional expertise by reading appropriate professional literature, attending meetings, workshops, conferences and in-service education programs.
    7. Participates in Departmental education programs by teaching and supervising staff, students and volunteers.  Attends team conferences, meetings and in-services.

     REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

    1.  Reports directly to Manager, Therapeutic Recreation

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

    1. Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a related field from an accredited College or University, successful completion of a clinical Internship (400 hours) and must be NCTRC certified or eligible for certification within 6 months of date of  hire.
    2. CPR certification is required.
    3. Knowledge of physical rehabilitation and/or a various diagnoses of all ages.
    4. Ability to plan and coordinate activities for a variety of disabilities and ages
    5. Ability to perform activity analysis/modification for specific leisure skills and equipment modification for execution of treatment services.
    6. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with health care professionals, establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families, and motivate patients and provide direction to volunteers.
    7. Analytical skills necessary to design therapeutic recreation services, evaluate effectiveness of these services, and recommend ways to improve these services.
    8. Valid driver’s license in State of Illinois is necessary.

     WORKING CONDITIONS

    1. Normal patient care environment with some, little or no exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.
    2. Occasional exposure to infectious and contagious diseases when working with patients.
    3. May include exposure to community settings.
    4. Evening and weekend availability required.
