    General Summary

    The Sports Coordinator is responsible for the program organization and implementation of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (SRAlab) Sports Program, promoting good health, fitness, and well-being among individuals with disabilities.

     

    The Sports Coordinator will consistently demonstrate support of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab statement of Vision, Mission and Core Values by striving for excellence, contributing to the team efforts and showing respect and compassion for patients and their families, fellow employees, and all others with whom there is contact at or in the interest of the institute.

     

    The Sports Coordinator will demonstrate Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Core Attributes: Communication, Accountability, Flexibility/Adaptability, Judgment/Problem Solving, Customer Service and Core Values (Hope, Compassion, Discovery, Collaboration, and Commitment to Excellence) while fulfilling job duties.

     

    Principal Responsibilities

     

    The Sports Coordinator will:

     

    1. Facilitate the administrative aspects of adaptive sports programs including youth and adult sports programs, Military Sports Camp, Sports and Fitness special events, Caring for Kids program, and Paralympic Services programs.
    2. Assist with developing budget and managing expenses related to assigned sports programs.
    3. Recruit and coordinate participants for youth and adult adaptive sports programs, Military Sports Camp, Sports and Fitness special events, Caring for Kids program, and Paralympic Services programs.
    4. Recruit, train and supervise interns, program coaches and volunteers within all sports programs.
    5. Develop and implement Paralympic Services programs as directed by Paralympic Sport Club agreement.
    6. Develop training methods and instruct physical education teachers, Therapeutic Recreation professionals and other individuals on coaching and training techniques.
    7. Coordinate working relationships with community partners, including the Chicago Public Schools, Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, Chicago Park District, Special Recreation Associations, hospitals, and other community and professional contacts.
    8. Partner with the SRAlab Advancement department in building and maintaining donor funding for related sports programs.
    9. Collect records and program statistics, producing reports with respect to volunteers and participant attendance for assigned programs.
    10. Maintain Sports Programs website.
    11. Maintain sports equipment inventory, including purchasing and maintenance of equipment.
    12. Transport participants and sports equipment, driving vans and busses and operating vehicles that pull a trailer.
    13. Develop education and marketing materials including video, photo and Power Point presentations for Sports Programs.
    14. Conduct presentations and demonstrations at conferences and seminars for recruitment and community outreach.
    15. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

     

     

    Reporting Relationships

     

    1. Reports directly to the Director, Adaptive Sports and Fitness Programs, Therapeutic Recreation and Volunteer Services

     

     

    Required Skills Required Experience

     

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

     

    1. Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation, sports management, occupational therapy, physical therapy, health care administration, public health or related area.
    2. Certification as Therapeutic Recreation Specialist highly desirable.
    3. Minimum 2 years of experience with knowledge of the administrative needs of an adapted sports program for people with physical disabilities.
    4. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with others, including Sports Coordinators, Specialist and community partners.
    5. Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills necessary to interact with internal and external customers.
    6. Advanced organizational skills necessary to efficiently prioritize and complete a variety of tasks and provide leadership.
    7. Ability to be self-directed and motivated, prioritize goals and tasks, and exercise efficient time management
    8. Ability to lift at least 25 pounds.
    9. Current driver’s license and the ability to drive vans and busses and operate vehicles that pull a trailer.

     

    Working Conditions

     

    1. Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
