    GENERAL SUMMARY

     

    Medical assistants are allied health professionals who assist physicians in their offices or other medical settings.  In accordance with respective state laws, they perform a broad range of administrative and clinical duties.  They provide direct patient care under the guidance of licensed personnel to patients of all ages. 

     

    PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    1. Support daily clinical operations through the management of patient flow within a particular unit and/or physician.
    2. Greet all patients, visitors and staff with highest levels of customer service, respect and professionalism.
    3. Perform clinical duties based on departmental needs, including but not limited to:
    4. Participate in departmental duties as assigned or as needed, including but not limited to:
    5. Administrative duties include the check-in or receiving of patients, scheduling and registration, basic secretarial skills and medical transcription, handling telephone calls and writing correspondence, , the check-out of patients
    6. Serve as a liaison between the physician and other departments/individuals.
    7. Uphold and maintain all confidentiality and patient privacy standards at all times and in the completion of all duties.
    8. Other responsibilities and duties as assigned by management or supervisor.
    • Patient vitals and weights
    • Patient interviews for brief medical histories, including recording allergies, medications, chief complaints, etc.
    • Venipuncture according to SRAlab guidelines and protocols and standard aseptic technique
    • Specimen collection
    • Wound care, skin checks, dressing changes
    • Bowel and Bladder care, such as straight catheter placements, hemoccult, rectal checks, etc.
    • Emergency care as needed, including CPR and first aid, use of crash carts and AEDs
    • Basic EKG
    • Respiratory testing as ordered by the physician, such as pulse oximetry, nebulizer treatments, pulmonary function, etc.
    • Patient and room prep for visits or procedures, including lifting, transfers, set up of equipment and instrumentation, etc.
    • Activities of Daily Living as needed/requested by the patients
    • Full and timely clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory standards, policies and procedures
    • Assisting physicians and nurses with prescription refills, medication recording keeping
    • Glucose testing as needed
    • Exam assistance as determined by the supervising physician or care team
    • Room  turnover between patient visits
    • Infection control/disinfection of rooms and equipment
    • Medical records preparation and filing
    • Daily inventory and restocking of exam room and unit supplies
    • Charge entry of facility-based charges when necessary

     

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

     

    1. Formal completion of a Medical Assistant Program resulting in a certificate or diploma,  which includes  completion of an internship that provides practical experience in qualified physicians' offices, accredited hospitals, or other health care facilities.   
    2. Current certification as a Medical Assistant or a minimum of two years of clinical experience is required.
    3. Current CPR certification, required.
    4. Minimum of 1+ years of professional experience performing venipuncture, wound care, assistive procedures as outlined above, preferred.
    5. Intermediate computer skills and experience working within an electronic medical record, strongly preferred.
    6. Problem solving and decision making skills, with ability to confront and resolve issues in a timely manner.
    7. Ability to handle and prioritize many tasks under potentially stressful situations.
    8. Strong interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients, patient families, employees, physicians, referring parties, and other SRAlab system-wide staff.
