GENERAL SUMMARY 

The Data Architect is a member of the Data Solutions Team, working in a dynamic cross-functional environment to guide the strategic direction and the meaningful full use of data within the organization.   They will adapt or develop and implement a data model to provide useful ontologies and semantics for protected health information (PHI) and non-PHI data in our enterprise data warehouse (EDW). Creates pipelines for data from various sources into the EDW consistent with that data model. Adapts database systems and architecture as necessary to meet the needs of the organization.

Principal Responsibilities

Collaborate within the Data Solutions Team, other Information Services (IS) teams, executive leadership, external consultants, and stakeholders from various departments within the hospital to:

1. Develop a secure, stable, scalable long-term plan for the flow of the hospital’s data, primarily utilizing existing resources.
2. Design and build scalable data infrastructure and platforms to collect and process large amounts of data, including structured and unstructured data for analysis by clinical, research, and business resources. Data sources can be both internally and externally sourced.
3. Establish methods and procedures for tracking data quality, completeness, redundancy, compliance and improvement.
4. Create strategies and plans for data capacity planning, data security, life cycle data management, scalability, backup and archiving.
5. Oversee the mapping of data sources, data movement, interfaces, and analytics, with the goal of ensuring data quality.
6. Define standards for naming, describing, governing, managing, modeling, cleansing, enriching, transforming, moving, storing, searching and delivering data within the Data Solutions Team.
7. Create short-term tactical solutions to achieve long-term objectives and an overall data management roadmap.
8. Participate in data and information model design across multiple stakeholders
9. Develop or adapt a data model for representation of clinical data for our EDW
10. Acquire data from primary or secondary data sources and maintain databases/data systems
11. Identify and evaluate opportunities for enhancement of current data architecture and data management technologies
12. Create APIs and cloud-based (AWS) databases to work with existing and new in-house applications
13. Monitor, update, and ensure consistent uptime and availability of data systems.
14. Performs other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

1. Reports directly to the Manager – Data Solutions

Required Skills Required Experience

1. Bachelor’s degree in computer science or computer engineering, or in a related area (data science, mathematics, statistics, economics, etc.), Master’s degree preferred
2. Minimum 5 years of experience in SQL combined with experience with PostgreSQL and PostgreSQL derivatives.
3. Minimum 3 years of Java and/or Python.
4. Familiarity with Cerner Millenium is beneficial, but not required
5. Knowledge and understanding of HIPAA and data security.
6. Experience with enterprise technologies like Hadoop and Talend
7. Demonstrated experience in handling large data sets and relational databases.
8. Knowledge and experience working with ELT processes
9. Experience with software for reliable, scalable, distributed computing
10. Strong communication skills, particularly those relevant to translating highly technical information for non-technical audiences
11. Demonstrated ability to manage and see through long-term projects
12. Proactive work habits and ability to propose and develop new projects and initiatives - advocate and promote incremental adoption of new technologies.

Working Conditions

1. Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
