The Art Therapist will coordinate and facilitate art therapy programs that assist patients process emotions and improve cognition, hand/motor function, and adjust to disability. Confers with rehabilitation team in developing and implementing art therapy programs. Budgets program funds with supervisor, and is responsible for inventory, storage, and replacement of equipment and supplies.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Coordinate art therapy programs that assist with patient recovery/stability through conferring with physicians and treatment team members in establishing therapy goals.
2. Budget program funds and manage art supply inventory, storage and equipment, which involves working with vendors, evaluating products and recommending acquisition of supplies and equip9ment.
3. Coordinates art related events and projects within the department/Institute as deemed appropriate and schedule permits.
4. Prepares documentation and progress reports pertaining the progress of patients resulting from art therapy programs.
5. Facilitates an art studio to enhance relaxation, leisure skills, and to develop a hobby.
6. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

1. Reports directly to the Manager, Therapeutic Recreation

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Normal patient care environment with little or no exposure to dust, noise or extreme temperature.
2. Exposure to moderately adverse working conditions in performing certain patient care activities.
3. Occasional exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients.
4. Evening and weekend flexibility required.

Required Skills Required Experience

1. Knowledge of art therapy at a level normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art and successful completion of a clinical training in a clinical institution.
2. A.T.R. Certification (Registered Art Therapist) preferred.
3. Approximately 3-6 months on-the-job training to gain expertise in program design, psychological/medical aspects of patients, and to gain knowledge of artwork typical of various diagnostic groups.
4. Knowledge and understanding of the growth and development of child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
5. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients and families in providing therapy and with physicians and other treatment team members in gathering and exchanging patient progress information.
6. Analytical skills necessary to collect, interpret and analyze artwork, observe and note significant patient behaviors, evaluate effectiveness of program and administer budget associated with the program.
7. Able to maintain knowledge of current professional standards and practices by reading appropriate professional literature, attending meetings, workshops, and in-service education programs.
