  • Responsibilities

    With limited, to direct supervision from the Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Technician (LT) performs chemical laboratory functions (esp. coating research, formulations, materials ID, and analysis), and materials engineering in support of Corporate R&D for new product development, and existing business/plant support. The LT also performs physical analyses (as needed) related to materials used in packaging manufacturing. Also, performs testing in relation to the design and performance of packaging used in cooking applications.

    • Assists in material-related projects and programs in support of Global R&D, especially relating to coatings, coating chemistry, formulations, coating development, and research.

    • Supervised formulary and materials analysis in direct support of the projects assigned to the Laboratory Manager.

    • ‘Typical’ wet-chemistry laboratory techniques including: extractions, formulary, mixing, pH, viscosity, NVR, etc.

    • Optical/digital microscopy and ‘general’ lab analyses in support of MW, and other initiatives including cooking analysis, and reverse-engineering for the detailed break-down of individual components of samples for thickness, structural ID, etc.

    • Conducts analytical analysis of paperboard, films, adhesives, inks & coatings via FTIR and DSC analytical techniques.

    • Performs cooking/performance evaluations of microwave packaging structures.

    • Develop and evaluate new procedures for the ‘chemical’ analyses of MW, and folding carton substrates.

    • Writes detailed reports and emails stating results and conclusions, and future course of action from the lab work completed.

      REQUIRED SKILLS: BA/BS in chemistry required. Coating/ink, and polymer experience acquired through work within the packaging, or chemical industries is a strong asset to this position and may receive additional consideration. FTIR and DSC experience, and knowledge also a definite benefit, especially familiarization with Thermo Electron’s Omnic software packages for FTIR analytical techniques. Additional skills and coursework, knowledge and/or experience in bio-polymers, paper production & test methods, and food science related to microwave cooking are also desired skillsets.

             REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:          3-5 years’ experience in a ‘working’ lab environment achieved through school/university, and/or work experience/job functions.
