    Job Description

    Under general supervision, this position performs indirect patient care duties, which support the staff’s ability to deliver patient care. Assures unit needs, within scope of practice, are met in a timely and efficient and supportive manner to support environment, which fosters the patient and family centered model of care. Functions as a member of the Health Care Team to assist the assigned inpatient area/unit with patient flow activity performing a variety of clerical and support duties based upon currently approved policies and procedures recognized by the Medical Center. Coordinates unit supplies and may transport patients/equipment for the patient care unit. Assists with special projects, including delivering specialty supplies to units and sorting the mail for the Nursing Staffing office .

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    PATIENT CARE: Provides assistance to all floors/units by obtaining supplies from SCD, CPD or other areas as requested. Delivers specimens if pneumatic tube system is down.

    • Responds to all medically emergent situations, i.e., CODE 99 and all STAT pages/emergencies aiding the Unit Coordinator or other staff and performs duties as instructed.
    • Under the direction of the professional nurse, may transport patient or coordinates all appropriate personnel for safe transport of patients.
    • Obtains and delivers medical records and discharge summaries to floor/units.
    • Provides patient food supplies for admissions after 9:00pm as requested.
    • Serves as back up as needed to the Unit Coordinator with functions that include the following:
    • Promptly answers telephones, triages telephone calls, using appropriate and approved etiquette, and notifies/pages appropriate staff. - Informs nurse, intern, resident, and the ADT Center when receives notice that new admissions are arriving on the unit..
    • Assembly of charts for admissions and disassembles chart for discharge including filing, sorting EKG’s, x-rays, pathology reports, operative notes, progress notes, consultations, etc., for current, discharged, and transferred patients.
    • As requested, labels - patient names and updates bed boards, bedside charts, and computer information, including diet, condition, allergies, height and weight of patients.
    • Utilizes hospital computer systems accurately to enter orders, verify orders, retrieve data and generate reports. Reports malfunction to help desk.
    • Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment
    • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

    COLLABORATION: Demonstrates/applies the skills necessary to interact with the health care team in regards to the implementation of the medical/nursing plan of care.

    • Accepts assignments positively and resolves issues in a mature manner.
    • Promotes open communication with the nursing staff to ensure a positive work environment.
    • Conducts self in a kind and courteous manner to patients, families and staff.
    • Accepts constructive feedback regarding performance and effects a positive change in a timely fashion.

    • Maintains attendance in accordance with the Medical Center policy
    • Adheres to the Medical Center dress code.
    • Maintains a work area that is neat, organized and free of food and beverages.
    • Makes breaks/lunch when nursing staff can accommodate coverage.
    • Maintain positive customer relations in all interactions.
    • Arrives to work on time and remains until the end of scheduled shift.
    • Notifies the Nurse Manager or in his/her absence, Central Staffing Office of absences according to hospital policy.

    JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    • Ability to read and write in English. Ability to interpret and act on data needed, and provide follow through on instructions.
    • Knowledge of computer systems and software with an ability to learn and retain new applications. Knowledge of Microsoft Office useful.
    • Familiarity with a wide variety of medical equipment/supplies and their intended uses.
    • Interpersonal skills must be sufficient to develop effective relationships and interaction with patients, families and staff.

    EDUCATION:

    • Level of knowledge generally obtained through completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.

    EXPERIENCE:

    • An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

    Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. This includes:

    WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Works in a hospital setting.
    • Frequent exposure to infectious disease, radium and open needles.
    • Constant walking, standing, bending, lifting and pushing.
    • Occasional stress and pressure caused by multiple simultaneous demands.
    • Frequent contact with patients, families, visitors, nurses and other department staff.
