    Job Description

    Under general supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician IV performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with department policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care. The Pharmacy Technician IV is responsible for providing pharmacy services, including, but not limited to, preparing and distributing pharmaceuticals, performing inventory control, compliance audits, financial transactions, providing customer service, and maintaining pharmacy records. In addition to the duties of the Pharmacy Technician III, Pharmacy Technician IV is responsible for coordinating duties such as scheduling shifts, training and development, and covering sick calls. In addition, a Pharmacy Technician IV may coordinate workflow and major processes.

    A Pharmacy Technician IV may not administer medications or vaccines, perform drug utilization review, conduct clinical conflict resolution, contact prescribers concerning prescription drug order clarification or therapy modification, provide patient counseling, or perform dispensing process validation, unless a waiver is approved by the Board of Pharmacy. In order to be eligible for a promotion into the Pharmacy Technician IV position, one must demonstrate an acceptable level of performance based on competency assessments and maintains proficiency in advanced functions.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Major responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician IV will vary depending on which pharmacy area he/she is employed.
    • Assists a manager or supervisor by coordinating the work of an assigned group of employees. Shows the ability to relay, distribute, and monitor work instructions.
    • Supports the development of training programs, policies, and scheduling.
    • Assists in ensuring employees are provided with appropriate resources.
    • Encourages employee engagement activities and efforts.
    • Provides recommendations for the most efficient utilization of assigned personnel. May provide employee performance information and report employee performance problems.
    • Oversees compliance with quality assurance programs and regulations.
    • Actively procures medications and investigates resolution for backorders/drug shortages.
    • Analyzes data and makes recommendations for process improvement and regulatory compliance.
    • Coordinates follow-up with physicians, patients, and the health care team to ensure medication access.
    • Leads team employee engagement activities.
    • Performs validation of training and quality assurance programs per policies and procedures.
    • Participates in recruiting, interviewing and recognizing other team members.
    • Demonstrates leadership abilities.
    • Oversees the performance of automation and/or technology within the medication use process.
    • Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups’ achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.
    • A pharmacy technician shall wear a name tag with the individual’s name and the title “Certified Pharmacy Technician”.
    • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

    340B COMPLIANCE ANALYST

    Conducts 340B audits of all Hospital, Clinic, and Contract Pharmacies to ensure program integrity. Functions will include, but not limited to execution and documentation of daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly audits to verify adherence with the 340B Program regulations and/or guidelines and as outlined in 340B policies and procedures. Other outcomes for this role are:

                                                                

    SELF-AUDITS

    • Be involved in any and all 340B Program audits.
    • Perform audits on a scheduled basis; may involve presenting and resolving reconciliation issues as they arise during the monitoring and reconciliation process.
    • Perform monthly audits of contract pharmacies.
    • Perform monthly self-audits of 340B pharmacy operations.
    • Ensure compliance with 340B Program requirements for qualified patients, drugs, and locations.
    • Monitor and audit state Medicaid claims to ensure compliance to prevent potential duplicate discount rebates.
    • Using Excel or a comparable data management program, filter out non-eligible transactions, including, but not limited to, drugs used to treat patients during inpatient care, Medicaid patients, those provided at non-eligible locations, or prescriptions written by non-eligible providers.
    • Evaluate patient eligibility for qualified and non-qualified patients in mixed-use areas and clinics by reviewing patient medical records, insurance plans, and, if applicable, hospital status.
    • Ensure provider list is current with active 340B eligible providers
    • Develop and foster working relationships with internal working counterparts to facilitate productive exchanges of information to improve program efficiency and promote program compliance.
    • Develop reports that can be used to educate staff and assist management in tracking the overall financial impact to the organization. Build other reports, as appropriate, to monitor and improve 340B Program compliance and performance.
    • Maintain easily accessible copies of reports for compliance and audit purposes

    JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    • The demonstrated ability to perform all Pharmacy Technician IV job duties at a high level of proficiency on a sustained basis, and with dedication to a high level of quality, teamwork, and customer service
    • Must be at least 18 years of age
    • Must be of good moral character
    • Must not have been convicted of a drug-related felony or admitted to sufficient facts to warrant such finding
    • Annually serves on at least one pharmacy meeting, council or committee and actively participates
    • Provides on-going peer education during departmental in-services, orientation, and contributes to educational programming
    • Identifies, coordinates, and leads more than one quality improvement initiative approved by their manager per year

    EDUCATION:

    • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent, or currently enrolled in a program that awards such degree or certificate. Continuing education credits to maintain pharmacy technician certification must be current for the past 2 years.

    EXPERIENCE:

    • Must have a minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a practice setting relevant to their role.

    LICENSES/CERTIFICATION, ETC.

    • Must be nationally certified with PTCB or a Board-approved certifying body.
    • Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
    • In the event that a certified pharmacy technician’s certification lapses, that technician shall be limited to performing the duties and responsibilities of a Pharmacy Technician I.

     

     

    E. WORK SCHEDULE:

     

    ¨ Full-time employment is 40 hours per week. Includes evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.

     

     

    V. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

     

    ¨ Ability to walk and stand 90% of the day and to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.

    ¨ Work requires regularly reaching and grasping below, at, and above shoulder level.

    ¨ Work requires regularly pushing and/or pulling non-motorized equipment (e.g., carts, IV rolling rack, and medication rolling racks, etc.) weighing 40 to 60 pounds.

    ¨ Work requires regularly grasping and fine manipulation with hands.

    ¨ Work requires reading automated dispensing reports regularly.

    ¨ Works in an area with some discomfort due to dust, dirt, and temperature changes.

    ¨ Possibility of cuts from broken glass and some exposure to hazardous chemicals.

    ¨ No potential exposure to blood borne pathogens.

    ¨ Job requires performance of duties that involve no potential for exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

    ¨ Tasks that do involve exposure are not an expectation of employment.
