    Job Description

    This position plans and implements specific treatment programs for individual patients according to the principles and practices of physical therapy. Collaborates with interdisciplinary treatment team.

    INPATIENT ADULT PHYSICAL THERAPIST 

    JOB DETAILS:

    • Therapists rotate caseloads every 6 months.
    • Expectation for all therapists to eventually become ICU competent.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Has ability to manage and be flexible prioritizing patient caseload.
    • Has the medical literacy to perform complex chart reviews and determine appropriateness for therapy intervention.
    • Problem solves effectively with interdisciplinary team, patients and their families for optimal discharge planning of diverse patient populations.
    • Is willing and capable of continuous learning to provide care across the hospital.
    • Demonstrates flexibility in cross-coverage of various diagnoses based on staffing and patient census.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Perform examination and evaluation of orthopedic, neurologic, geriatric, pediatric, cardiac and vascular patients
    • Establish a physical therapy diagnosis
    • Establish and carry out treatment plan and modify as appropriate
    • Identify appropriate discharge plan
    • Perform job as described by Inpatient Physical Therapy Competencies
    • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to assess the needs of patients of all different age populations in order to provide care appropriately
    • Supervises and mentors students
    • Demonstrates and carries out plan for professional development
    • Keeps current in the field through continuing education, in-service training and literature reviews
    • Perform patient and family education
    • Work with administrative and support personnel
    • Educate colleagues and hospital employees regarding role of physical therapy through staff in-services, Physical Therapy Month events
    • Communicate with health care team about PT plan of care and discharge recommendations
    • Present a minimum of one department-wide in-service per year, preferably continuing education material
    • Practices following all legal and ethical requirements as outlined by the Massachusetts state law and APTA’s Code of Ethics

     ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Maintain accurate, timely and professional documentation
    • Perform patient billing appropriately and ethically
  • Qualifications

    JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    • Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to assess the needs of patients of all different age populations in order to provide care appropriately.

    EDUCATION:

    • Bachelor’s Degree needed.

    EXPERIENCE:

    • 1 to 2 years
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

    LICENSES, ETC.:

    • Must be Board Certified and have appropriate license
    • APTA membership highly recommended

    Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. This includes:

    • Knowledge of growth and development
    • Ability to interpret age specific data and response to care
    • Provide age specific communication

    WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking
    • Lifts, positions, pushes and or transfers patients
    • Lifts supplies and equipment
