    Job Description

    This is an introductory technologist position for CLIA eligible bachelor’s level candidates with less than one year of laboratory experience. Employee will train and work within the department until reaching one year of laboratory experience to be eligible as a Medical Technologist. Post training and after assessment of competency, this position performs routine and non-routine laboratory high complexity laboratory testing. Analyzes, records, and reports test results, conducts quality control when appropriate, and maintains equipment in working order.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Performs routine and non-routine laboratory tests including CLIA highly complex testing.
    • Records and reviews results to determine if additional testing is required and performs those tests as needed.
    • Performs troubleshooting of instruments, takes and records corrective action. Problems requiring advanced technical knowledge are referred to a higher level.
    • Participates in inter/intra laboratory committees, such as safety committee.
    • May assist in the set up of new procedures, modification of existing procedures, update of procedure manuals, and evaluation of new products.
    • May perform administrative functions such as purchasing or inventory control.
    • Relays test results and/or reports to physicians or others authorized to receive them. Discusses findings with physicians when necessary.
    • Attends mandatory annual training sessions in standard precautions, fire safety, chemical hygiene, and laboratory compliance.
    • Performs all functions that are required for the laboratory to meet the standards specified by accrediting agencies such as The Joint Commission (TJC) and CAP with respect to: written technical and administrative procedures and policies covering test methodologies, operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment, quality control of testing and reporting, specimen collection and handling, plant maintenance, personnel policies, safety, and quality assurance
    • Performs other similar and job related duties as required or directed.

    JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    • Must have the ability to operate sophisticated and technical equipment and perform tests requiring analytical and interpretive skills with a high degree of accuracy.
    • Must have interpersonal skills necessary to interact with peers, physicians, nurses, medical students, and fellows.
    • Must be able to work accurately and effectively under pressure.

    EDUCATION:

    • Level of knowledge obtained through a Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.

    EXPERIENCE:

    • Prior laboratory experience and proficiency in medical terminology is preferred.

    WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Regular exposure to body fluids and other infectious material, toxic and hazardous substances, and disagreeable odors.
    • Subject to the stress of working under time pressure to meet production schedules.
    • Work may cause visual fatigue due to close examination of large numbers of specimens or CRT use.
    • Patient contact, and the risk of puncture wounds with blood-contaminated needles when performing phlebotomy.
