    Job Description

    Under the direction of the Executive Director for Quality and Patient safety, the Patient Safety Program Analyst has primary responsibility for supporting the medical center’s patient safety initiatives including oversight of the patient safety event reporting system and functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the safety event reporting system classification and review processes, and the safety event feedback process, leader and staff education and training. The Patient Safety Program Analyst works closely Risk Management, department leaders and staff across the medical center to review and triage safety event reports, ensure timely assessment and follow up, and perform analyses that support both hospital-wide and departmental review and performance improvement initiatives. The Patient Safety Program Analyst leads change and participates in projects that aim to identify and mitigate patient safety risks in close collaboration with departments across the organization.

    The Patient Safety Program Analyst requires a high degree of autonomy and creativity in analyzing and investigating causes for and variations in processes that result in errors or critical events and facilitating improvement teams. The Patient Safety Program Analyst must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, enjoy working in inter-professional teams and work groups, successfully manage multiple tasks, and adapt to shifting deadlines and priorities.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Oversees and manages Tufts Medical Center’s patient safety event reporting system and database. This includes oversight of software upgrades, database enhancements as well as implementing, leading and communicating changes to the database across the organization.
    • Triages patient safety event reports and ensures timely and appropriate assessment and follow up.
    • Produces reports for key stakeholders and shares findings with excellent written and verbal presentation skills.
    • Demonstrates strong analytic skills, knowledge of Microsoft office tools. Ability to create reports. Utilizes data to develop recommendations for improvement projects.
    • Facilitates work groups, including the Weekly Quantros Review group, the Medication Error Review Team, and the Falls Review Group.
    • Creates meeting agendas, presentations, minutes, and written reports.
    • Fosters collaborative team relationships with peers and colleagues, creating a trusting, positive work environment.
    • Communicates sensitive data. Responsible for developing and communicating event summary data and analysis to the Tufts Medical Center community via newsletters, etc.
    • Fosters a culture of safety and trust in role modeling Just Culture Behaviors.
    • Oversees new Manager training for the event reporting system. Trains users on how to use patient safety tools during orientations and ad hoc training sessions.
    • Works collaboratively with performance improvement leaders. Assists with performance improvement projects.
    • Supports regulatory survey processes. Provides patient safety data to regulatory surveyors in a reliable and timely manner.
    • Performs additional duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    JOB REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must demonstrate strong analytic, problem solving and technical skills.
    • Advanced knowledge and experience with process improvement techniques required.
    • Must have strong leadership and excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Demonstrates competency in facilitating multidisciplinary meetings and presenting to various audiences including Senior leaders, Department Chairs, and others.
    • Must have superior organization skills to manage large volume of incoming data and information.
    • Knowledge of patient safety principles, clinical terminology, regulatory requirements, and quality improvement tools such as process maps and rapid-cycle improvement techniques.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other relevant software.
    • Flexibility in work schedule.

    EDUCATION:

    • Master’s degree in health management, public health or other related field required.

    EXPERIENCE:

    • 3-5 years of relevant experience is required.
    • Previous healthcare experience strongly preferred.
    • Quality improvement experience strongly preferred.
    • Project management experience preferred.

    WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Normal office setting.
    • Frequent contact with nurses, physicians and other hospital staff.
