    Job Description

    Under close supervision, performs disinfecting duties according to infection control procedures in the Operating Room areas. Maintains area according to accepted level of cleanliness and order.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Dusts all high ledges and surfaces with high dust handle and mop head.
    • Using appropriate chemicals and tools, washes and disinfects all walls and surfaces.
    • Using handle and dry mop head, dry mops floors.
    • Using appropriate chemicals and tools, damp disinfects all floors.
    • With appropriate chemicals and tools, thoroughly cleans and disinfects all furniture, equipment, scrub sinks, glass and stainless steel surfaces.
    • Thoroughly cleans staff lounges and locker rooms including sinks, toilets and showers. Replenishes paper and soap supplies.
    • Collects trash, relines waste receptacles and brings trash to dumpster.
    • Collects soiled linen, relines hamper and deposits soiled linen in soiled linen room.
    • Collects hazardous waste and disposes of it following the established infection control procedures.
    • Using roto machine and appropriate chemicals, remove surface dirt from floors.
    • Vacuums carpets in operating suite.
    • Completes thorough cleaning of operating room following contaminated cases, in accordance with hospital policy and with proper chemicals.

    JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    • Ability to read, speak basic English, count and follow simple instructions.
    • Two weeks on the job training.
    • Ability to operate simple mechanical devices such as floor rotos, vacuums, compactors, etc.
    • Physical skills required: Standing or walking majority of shift. Works in reaching or strained position for part of shift. Physical effort with medium weight equipment or supplies (60 lbs.) 20% of shift.

    WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Frequent indirect contact with patients, professional and general staff.
    • Frequent exposure to dust, dirt, blood, body waste and contaminated waste.
    • Possibility of cuts, needle punctures and muscle strains.
    • Occasional exposure to hazards, which may cause relatively serious injury or illness such as T.B., hepatitis, etc.
