Job Description
The Vice President, Cancer, Pathology and Radiology is responsible for service line management and oversight of all administrative and clinical activities of the medical center and physician organization’s Cancer, Hematology/Oncology and Radiation Oncology, as well as the Pathology and Lab Medicine physicians and Radiology physicians. These include all services in these departments defined by the current service line structure.
In collaboration with the Physician Leaders & Administrative Directors for the respective Service Lines, the Vice President is responsible for all aspects of the respective Service Line operations and financials including, but not limited to, strategic planning, business development, service quality and operational efficiency. This role works closely with every member of the senior management team to integrate services for seamless care delivery throughout the Tufts Medical Center enterprise and broader Wellforce system.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
The Vice President, Cancer, Pathology and Radiology will have a dual reporting relationship, reporting to the President of the Physicians Organization and the Chief Operating Officer of Tufts Medical Center.
Works closely with the Chair/Physician Leaders and leaders in the respective service lines as well as other Chairs/Chiefs, physician leaders, and senior leaders of other key contributors to the success of the Service Lines. In addition, works closely with nursing to ensure a high functioning triad leadership structure.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Plays a lead role in, and collaborates with other senior leaders in development and execution of the annual business plan for the Tufts Medical Center Physicians Organization & Tufts Medical Center that will foster the achievement of established goals for market share, budget, revenue, resource utilization and patient visits.
- Manages, with the Administrative Directors, all operational facets of specific Departments in area of responsibility, including procurement of equipment, inpatient length of stay, inpatient cost containment, ambulatory practice management, patient satisfaction, space management and physician engagement
- Focuses on overall growth of the specified service lines by working with our Wellforce partners to extend our services beyond Tufts Medical Center and bring our Distributed Academic Model to other Hospitals. In addition, continue to look for and execute growth opportunities outside of our current Wellforce partners.
- Together with Nursing leadership, creates a strategic plan ensuring high quality, fiscally responsible processes supporting excellence in patient care delivery
- Oversees the finances of the service lines, to help develop appropriate revenue and budgetary goals and to ensure that the goals are met. Provides budgeting and cost containment management for capital expenditures, operational expenses, etc.
- Lead continuous quality and process improvement. Implement standard work in collaboration with other service line VPs. Develop an operational dashboard for each clinical area, including quality of care and service, staff satisfaction, physician relations, patient experience and financial performance.
- Collaborates with Physician Leadership and Physician Organization Management to ensure efficient business operations at physician practice offices and the smooth integration with hospital business operations, to effectively support the achievement of the business plan.
- Works with Nursing leadership on all aspects of the service lines inpatient enterprise, focused on length of stay management and overall expense management initiatives
- Develops, recommends and administers physician’s financial incentive programs to foster continual improvements in meeting established goals for the service line.
- Maintains an accurate sense of the market, identifies under-served needs, and suggests, researches and recommends corresponding viable programs, expansion opportunities, etc. Recommends opportunities for partnerships, etc.
- Collaborates with External Affairs to develop and carry out marketing and/or public relations programs to enhance Tufts Medical Center’s image within relevant healthcare communities as a medical service provider of choice.
- Working in collaboration with medical staff and hospital leadership, identifies and utilizes appropriate statistical measures, and ensures or produces meaningful reports that enable leadership to make clinical or operational process decisions, and monitor and continually improve clinical or administrative processes. Identifies and recommends appropriate performance metrics and benchmarks. Analyzes trends impacting volume at both the in-patient and outpatient level and makes recommendations to foster the programs’ continued success.
- Act as an advocate for the physicians, ensuring the Tufts Medical Center is the best place for them to work. This includes balancing the needs of our physicians with the needs of the institution, as well as collaborating with the other Departments and Service Lines to set a vision and work towards a common goal.
