  • Responsibilities

    OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY: This position manages the direction of patient care in the facility. Consults with staff and physicians about problems and interpretation of facility policies and procedures to ensure that patient needs are met. Responsible for staffing, orientation, clinical education, competency evaluation, policies and procedures related to the Facility. Establishes guidelines to identify the professional qualifications and skill required for employment for Pre-op, PACU, and OR. Executes nursing care in all areas for patients of all ages to ensure that the patients receive the highest quality of safe care. Executes all other tasks as requested by the Director of Surgical Services.

     KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

    1. Completes daily scheduling of staff for Pre-op, Surgery, and PACU according to case volume including approving time off requests.
    2. Facilitates and oversees cross training of Pre-op, Surgery, and PACU staff.
    3. Participates with the Director of Surgical Services and collaborating with HR as needed to hire, evaluate, counsel and discipline staff.
    4. Responsible for new hire training and in-service education of staff according to Hospital policies and procedures.
    5. Monitors, evaluates, and adjusts flow of patients in Pre-op, Surgery, and PACU/Phase II to ensure efficient and safe delivery of patient care.
    6. Communicates with Director of Surgical Services on a daily basis regarding patient flow, cancellations, add-ons, concerns and issues.
    7. Performs communication between departments to ensure efficient patient flow and patient safety.
    8. Prepares pre-op area and surgery suit for patient safety according to Hospital policies and procedures including trouble-shooting equipment, stocking supplies, checking for expired supplies and medication.
    9. Demonstrates knowledge of drug usage, their actions and side effects, interaction with anesthesia agents and expected patient outcomes.
    10. Recognizes emergency situation, responds quickly and efficiently following policy and procedure, ACLS, PALS, physician orders or emergency plan to prevent adverse patient outcomes.
    11. Maintains knowledge and adheres to policies/procedure, care standards for patient care while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
    12. Documents that assessments, interventions and patient outcomes are performed according to policy and procedure and Hospital standards.
    13. Demonstrates competence in assessing, treating, and caring for individuals in all areas based upon age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective.
    14. Completes all documentation in Cerner to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.
    15. Adheres to established Hospital safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
    16. Demonstrates the safe operation of equipment and machinery and follows procedures for reporting and correcting an unsafe situation.
    17. Demonstrates the importance of continuing education to the performance of Hospital responsibilities and growth in profession.
    18. Communicates patient information to assure confidentiality and continuity of care.
    19. Interacts with all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees in a mature, responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional Hospital environment.
    20. Communicates clearly, openly, and honestly in verbal and written formats.
    21. Assesses own performance using insight and constructive feedback to set goals to enrich knowledge and skills required to perform role.
    22. Maintains a positive work environment for staff and physicians and promotes team efforts.
    23. Ensures adequate staffing in order to achieve department’s function and purpose. Completes and maintains departmental staffing plans.
    24. Ensures that performance evaluation are current and are reviewed by employees during an annual performance awareness interview.
    25. Completes initial departmental orientation and competency review for newly hired employees.
    26. Participate in Quality Improvement programs including USPI EDGE.

    Required Skills Required Experience

    LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:

    1. Current BCLS, ACLS and PALS required. If not current, certification within 90 days of hire for ACLS and PALS.
    2. Licensed as an RN in the state of Oklahoma.

     

    EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

    1. Minimum of one year experience in pre-op and operating room departments.
    2. 2-3 years clinical management experience required in a surgical pre-op and operating room setting.
  • Qualifications

    REQUIRED:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required

    • Experience working in customer service role

    • Communication skills required to interview patients and families, to gather and exchange information with other hospital staff members, physicians, third party payors and resource persons

    • Concise written communication skills and keyboarding skills required.

     

    PREFERRED:

    • Two years’ experience with patient contact

    • Experience with patient contact in hospital, business or insurance office

    • Knowledge of basic medical terminology
