    osition Responsibilities:

    JOB SUMMARY: Provides direct patient care to pediatric through geriatric patient populations. Addresses the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment. Communicates with surgeon and anesthesiologist continuously and as needed about patient condition. Assists with the maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory. Participates in performance improvement activities. Assesses operating room for equipment functioning and readiness, obtains supplies for individual cases and ensures all appropriate needs of surgical operating team are met. Monitors, positions and assists patient during procedures.

      • Graduate of accredited school or professional nursing.
      • Three (1) years experience in surgery.
      • Current Arizona RN License
      • BLS, ACLS and PALS required
      • CNOR preferred
      • Critical thinking skills.
      • Excellent communication skills with staff, physicians, patients and families.
    • Knowledgeable of hospital policies and procedures specific to the operating room.

    • Clinically proficient in OR nursing skills, demonstrating knowledge of the developmental needs of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

    Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: Include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

    1. Assess patients at intervals as stated in policies and procedures.
    2. Develop an individualized peri-operative plan of care.
    3. Implement the plan of care using the following interventions: a. Protect patient from injury caused by chemical, electrical, laser, positioning, thermal sources, and extraneous objects. b. Perform count procedures to protect patient from unintended retained foreign objects. c. Perform interventions necessary to ensure patient’s procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level. d. Manage patient’s specimen(s) in the appropriate manner. e. Communicate patient’s current status throughout the continuum of care. f. Administer medication(s) appropriately. g. Perform interventions to maintain patient's wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels. h. Perform interventions to maintain the status of the patient’s genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems, and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels. i. Perform interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period. j. Perform interventions to protect patient from infection. k. Assess knowledge level of patient or designated support person and provide education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure. l. Actively involve patient or designated support person in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care and the rehabilitation process. m. Protect patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy. n. Provide culturally competent, age-appropriate, ethical care within legal standards of practice. o. Provide consistent and comparable care regardless of the setting.
    4. Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes.
    5. Transfer care as appropriate.
    6. Delegate tasks as appropriate according to the state Nurse Practice Act and job descriptions.
    7. Organizes and prepares medical records of patients. Documents care appropriately and fully.
    8. Participate in quality review and performance improvement projects.
    9. Participate in the performance appraisal process.
    10. Knows and adheres to policies of the Center and demonstrates fiscal responsibility.
    11. Maintain required competencies. Seeks involvement in activities that promote professional growth and behavior.
    12. Attend required meetings and educational sessions.
    13. Act as a patient advocate and maintain privacy of all appropriate information.
    14. Remains calm and functions as a team member during times of stress and crisis situations.
    15. Follows OSHA and other standards for protection against blood borne pathogens.
    16. Uses good body mechanics.
    17. Informs Pre-Op/PACU Manager of applicable day-to-day situations.
    18. Follows employee health and other personnel and staffing policies.

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.

    Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

    General familiarity with medical terminology as it pertains to anatomy and surgical procedures for an operating room.
