    Job Description

    Under general supervision, receives, inspects and delivers incoming materials, supplies and equipment to main distribution centers and user departments.

    Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

    The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

    1. Receives incoming medical and non-medical materials, supplies and equipment delivered to the hospital from various vendors. * Assists in unloading delivery trucks at the loading dock and safeguards while establishing audit trail. * Accepts or refuses deliveries based on established department criteria such as, inaccurate delivery address or inappropriate deliveries attempted after hours. * Documents items received either manually or in the Materials Management Information System.
    2. 2. Inspects deliveries by comparing information on packing slip with original purchase order to verify shipment accuracy. * Opens and inspects package contents for damage or defects; records discrepancies and damage information and notifies supervisor and/or Purchasing Department personnel as appropriate. * Contacts vendors as needed to identify destination of unlabeled deliveries, specifically, packages without purchase order numbers or department name. * Verifies count of items received and notes discrepancies on packing slip and in Materials Management Information System.
    3. Delivers medical and nonmedical materials, supplies and equipment to user departments upon receipt. Sorts delivered supplies by department and loads delivery carts for delivery. Uses materials handling equipment, as appropriate.
    4. Returns materials, supplies and equipment to vendors, as necessary. Retrieves supplies to be returned to vendors from various UMMS departments. Weights and determines value and shipping cost of items for shipment back to vendor. Seals and secures packages for return, as needed.
    5. Records, updates and monitors, regularly, files, logs and records relative to receiving activities, such as, packing slips, vendor information, and purchase orders.
    6. Maintains department supplies and equipment in good working order. Reports equipment or supply problems to the supervisor as necessary. Maintains a clean and neat work area.
    7. Observes departmental and general UMMS policies and procedures, particularly relating to the practices of safety and security measures.
    8. Attends in-service training programs and external educational programs to support professional growth and development, as directed by supervisor.
    9. Completes all work assignments daily.

    Education and Experience

    1. High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
    2. One year general work experience is required. Experience in a shipping and receiving or warehousing is preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    1. Ability to read, write, speak English and perform simple mathematical operations for identification of items received and for recordkeeping purposes, including, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Ability to follow written or verbal instructions accurately.
    2. Ability to operate potentially hazardous mechanical loading equipment, such as tow motors, electrical power jack, drum truck and pallet jaws. Ability to use a hand truck properly to move and deliver materials.
    3. Ability to perform data entry of information from packing slips into a CRT for recordkeeping to assist supervisor with tracking deliveries. Familiarity with invoices, purchase orders, packing orders, freight bills and other shipping documents is preferred.
    4. Ability to stand and walk, each approximately 50% of the time in the process of loading equipment on delivery carts, and picking up and delivering supplies. Ability to stoop and lift awkward or bulky equipment, crates or boxes of supplies up to no more than 60 lbs., approximately 75% of the time, to load delivery carts. Ability to push/pull carts and hand trucks of equipment and boxes and carts of supplies in delivering.
    5. Ability to work out of doors on the receiving dock, occasionally, for brief periods of time requiring exposure to external weather conditions.
    6. Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to work with various UMMS personnel regarding receipt and delivery of supplies, and to properly document receipt of supplies for recordkeeping purposes.

    Patient Safety

    Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

    1. Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
    2. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
    3. Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
