  • Responsibilities

    Job Description

    The main location is UMMC and will Float to UMROI and Midtown

    1. Collects blood from patients by performing venipuncture or finger-and-heel sticks for laboratory tests and for donations to the Blood Bank in accordance with established standards and practices/procedures, timely and effectively, as directed by the supervisor.
    2. Assesses patients for appropriate IV site, and initiates peripheral intravenous lines using jelcos, butterflies, needles, etc. as directed through physician orders. Changes IV sites every 48 hours. Rotation on floors every other day to check site. Keeps a log of all patients’ IVs so that site case can be done accurately.
    3. Performs “bleeding times”, testing blood clotting speed, blood cultures, blood glucose and other more advanced bedside testing on patients.
    4. Inserts heparin locks and other vascular access devices. Draws blood samples from them as required.
    5. Performs related patient care duties to include changing routine dressings to peripheral IV sites. Takes and records patient vital signs. Sets up and operates multiple lead EKG machines; attaches and removes EKG leads; obtains a rhythm strip.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required. Completion of a recognized training program, such as courses provided through University Hospital, community colleges, United States Armed Forces with the attainment of certification as a Nursing Extender, Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Corpsmen, or equivalent. Certification as a registered Phlebotomist by a nationally recognized Phlebotomy Society, such as, the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, is preferred.
    • One year phlebotomy experience performing finger and heel sticks, and starting IVs is preferred. Experience in a hospital environment is preferred.
    • Phlebotomy Certification from a nationally recognized organization (e.g. ASPT, ASCP) is required.
    • CPR Certification by the American Heart Association (e.g. BCLS) is required.
