    Job Description

    General Summary

    Under general administrative direction, the Education Coordinator supports the overall education needs of the Respiratory Care Department at both the Downtown and Midtown campus locations. Working from an approved annual operating plan, this role will coordinate, supervise and evaluate the efforts of the education supervisor roles. Outcomes will be tracked and reported quarterly. Inter-professional support will be coordinated and partnerships will be developed with system educators where needed. All employee education records will be maintained for completeness and accuracy in both the paper and electronic environments.

    Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

    The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

    • Work with department managers and director to develop a departmental education annual operating plan and education long-term strategy to prepare for staffing, special initiatives and changing best practices. A yearly schedule of education plans will be outlined to serve as a planning tool for staff, the schedule committee and any resources that will be needed.

    • Oversee and mentor the work of the respiratory care education supervisors. Maximize their work to align with weekly and longer term education planning. Set deadlines for project and initiative completion. Regularly meets with educators as a team to track progress and update the education timelines as needed.

    • Maintain data points for the department’s quarterly quality improvement report.

    • Coordinate student rotations with college affiliates. Update student rotation schedule. Participate in college program advisory boards. Validate competency of program preceptors to properly manage students in the UMMC environment. Assure all required student paperwork is kept on file. Maintain and track renewal dates of all college affiliation contracts.

    • Participate in the interview and coordinate onboarding of new employees. Maintain the formal orientation program documents, using the approved blueprint process.

    • Oversee and participate in the classroom phase of new hire orientation. Determine progress of individual employees and coordinate any additional education that is needed to successfully transition employees to the unit based preceptor phase of orientation.

    • Work with department manager to complete probationary reviews. The department roadmap will be introduced during this review.

    • Coordinate the evaluation of all first year employees and complete performance evaluations. Work with managers and clinical supervisors to transition each first year employee to the appropriate service area for continued supervisory mentor relationship.

    • Proactively plan for PICU orientation with special planning for NICU. Work with department managers to determine the number of NICU orientation positions available.

    • Seek out department opportunites for abstract preparation and presentation.

    • Plan to attend professional conferences to stay connected to best practices being highlighted by program speakers.

    • Interface with vendor equipment specialists to prepare inservicing for staff.

    • Manage a monthly journal review that pertains to practice at UMMC.

    • Work with department manager and director to keep AARC APEX data base up to date. Report out current APEX metrics quarterly for the Downtown and Midtown campus groups.

    • Prepare a robust staff meeting update to capture education success and upcoming activities that support the education operating plan and any items requiring special focus.

    • Serve as a staff mentor for the attainment of advanced degrees, credentials and clinical certifications.

    • Serve as a resource for professional works such as abstract and article preparation. Interface with the UMMC Director of Research and others in similar department-based roles.

    • Meet with unit educators and representatives from CPPD. Plan to report out any pertinent Respiratory Care updates at the CEC council meetings.

    • Utilize electronic, intranet-based environments like Google Classroom and preferably UMMSU.

    • Other education-based duties as assigned.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    • Licensed by the Maryland Board of Physician Quality Assurance as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
    • Five years of experience as RRT Credential required. 3 years of experience in an academic medical center preferred.
    • BLS required. ACLS, PALS and NRP required. Instructor status for ACLS, PALS or NRP preferred.
    • Two years of experience as a respiratory care educator required. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
    • Master’s degree required. Master’s in education or profession-based focus preferred.
    • AARC advanced credentials for adult and pediatric preferer

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Ability to oversee the work of education supervisors and staff level therapists. Proactively bring items to the manager or director as needed that require special attention.
    • Demonstrate highly effective verbal and written communication skills that are required to work with patients, therapists, medical and nursing staff successfully and to document patient progress and quality management activities.
