    Patient Safety Manager/Patient Safety Officer

    ATTENTION: Registered Nurses with Patient Safety Experience!!!

    The Manager of Patient Safety/ (PSO) is responsible for coordinating the efforts of leadership and front line staff, to focus on improving patient safety to effectively result and sustain “Zero” patient harm.

    This role works directly with the University of Maryland Medical Center Senior Director Patient Safety to develop and manage initiatives that promote a Culture of Patient Safety, focused on executing the mission, vision and values of Midtown, using the tenets of a Just Culture and a High Reliability Organization. This role will collaborate with clinical leadership, established unit dyads and frontline staff, to establish accountability and eliminate intimidating behavior, promote open communication both horizontally and vertically, to prevent reoccurrence of patient near misses and/or resulting harm events. This role will collaborate with nursing education and physician leadership, to educate staff, at all levels, to enhance competency. Collaboratively work interdepartmentally and interdisciplinary, to establish a blameless and supportive environment, that balances a non-punitive response to human error, with the appropriate level of accountability for reckless behavior.

    In addition, the manager in this role will facilitate feedback from front line staff regarding opportunities for improvement and will systematically implement effective programs and create initiatives to continuously reduce patient harm. The role will engage staff at all levels, to maintain ongoing compliance with safety initiatives, accreditation standards and regulatory compliance and will participate in activities that support continuous accreditation and regulatory readiness. Provides local leadership to the Midtown Campus Patient Safety Team, while functionally supporting initiatives across both campuses to advance the UMMC Patient Safety Program Plan.

    Qualifications

    • Leadership, team building and critical thinking skills.
    • Advanced interpersonal communication skills to provide effective consultation and collaboration. Ability to organize and define problems, develop strategies, and carry out action plans. Advanced analytical skills to trend and analyze data.
    • Capable of exercising sound judgment and making independent decisions. Ability to adapt to a complex organizational environment.
    • Thorough knowledge of TJC, CMS and patient safety related regulations and standards.

    Education:

    • Master’s degree in nursing or related health science field is required.

    Experience:

    • 5-7 years of clinical experience in a hospital-based environment is required.
    • Five of these years should include patient safety experience that provides comprehensive knowledge of patient safety and TJC standards and regulations.
    • Prior leadership responsibility with a proven track record of implementing change in a complex environment.
