    Job Description

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Assists the professional and licensed nursing staff in the implementation of age specific (as defined in unit-based scope of service) nursing care. In sharing his/her observations, the Collegiate Nurse contributes to information needed in assessing, planning, and evaluating the care of a group of patients. The Collegiate Nurse is an ancillary hospital employee, functioning in Nursing Service under the direct supervision of an RN. He/she assumes responsibility to provide care to patients under the direction supervision of an RN. Performs related duties as assigned.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

    PATIENT CARE

    1. Provides high quality, safe, patient centered care with focus on exceeding service expectations
    2. Performs direct and indirect patient care activities as delegated by the RN adhering to standards of care and scope of practice
    3. Participates with RN in obtaining accurate patient information to develop patient’s plan of care according to the patient’s age, developmental, and cultural needs
    4. Observes and reports to the RN the patient’s condition and response to procedures or interventions
    5. Assists patients with meals, mobility, toileting and bathing as appropriate for patient’s condition
    6. Assists with patient admission by preparing room, greeting the patient, obtain vital signs, height and weight, orienting patient to room and call bell
    7. Assists with patient discharge by gathering belongings, ensuring patient is appropriately dressed, prepare room for cleaning, and return equipment
    8. Provides team support in emergency situations by providing supplies and/or participating in CPR

    SAFETY

    1. Keeps patient’s room neat and free of trip hazards
    2. Ensures fall reduction equipment is in place and working
    3. Serves as safety companion as directed by RN
    4. Completes patient room rounds per unit protocol
    5. Keeps hallways, common areas, supply areas neat and orderly
    6. Stocks supplies
    7. Promptly reports any unsafe conditions or faulty equipment to RN
    8. Responds to emergency codes and supports team as directed within scope of practice

    MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

    High school graduate or equivalent. Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program with completion of one clinic course in acute care setting. Successful completion of Fundamentals of Nursing Course or MEIMMS certification.

    Current AHA BLS certification required.

    The employee in this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the age of the patients served. He/she must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status, to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the necessary care as described in the department's policies and procedures.
