    Job Description

    JOB SUMMARY:

    • The scope of the nurse examiner’s expertise includes performing a comprehensive, skilled, medical-legal examination to identify, collect and document physical findings associated with sexual assault. The nurse is required to maintain the standards of professional nursing within the state Nurse Practice Act.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

    • In addition to basic care utilizing the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation, the nurse examiner will:
    • Provide crisis intervention during the initial review and an assessment of injury.
    • Objectively document health history to determine the bio/psycho/social risk and the risk of medical sequelae.
    • Objective documentation of the history of the crime.
    • Collect, document and package forensic evidence for crime lab analysis.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

    • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing. Current licensure in the State of Maryland. Successful completion of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner’s Program. Required 12 months experience in nursing. Must meet all applicable federal, state, and local professional requirements.
    • The employee in this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the age of the patients served. He/she must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status, to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/here age-specific needs, and to provide the necessary care as described in the department's policies and procedures.
