    Job Description

    Full Time – Rotating, 7a-7p, 7p-7a

    Assumes responsibility for cardiac monitoring functions on patients requiring monitoring on nursing units and completes appropriate documentation. Supports direct patient care activities by performing clerical functions and communicates to all persons involved in unit operations. Responsible for maintaining patient records in a condition which promotes efficient data collection and retrieval. Works under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. Supports System and Nursing Strategic Plans, Relationship-Based Care, and Shared Leadership.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

    1. Constantly observes cardiac monitors.
    2. Monitors, documents, and reports unsafe cardiac monitoring equipment.
    3. Runs a cardiac rhythm strip for each patient, at designated intervals; files on patient's medical record; documents cardiac rhythms with interpretation on patient's medical record.
    4. Identifies and reports to RN or physician any new and/or significant arrhythmias, documents on the record.
    5. Monitors the rhythm, during a cardiac emergency, at the central station; documents rhythm changes (make notations of the time of each event on the rhythm strips).
    6. Initiates, completes, maintains and/or updates a variety of records, manuals, resource materials and reports.
    7. Monitors and files report on patient's medical record.
    8. Changes batteries, applies electrodes, and initiates repairs to monitors.
    9. Processes patient charges.
    10. Performs clerical duties which include but are not limited to: 1. accurate, legible transcription of orders 2. copying and filing 3. chart assembly and breakdown 4. telephone etiquette and technical skills 5. scheduling of diagnostic tests
    11. Maintains an orderly work environment by minimizing clutter/noise in the nurses' station, assisting physicians and other health care team members with charts, and performing light cleaning duties.
    12. Monitors, requisitions, and stocks supplies to maintain unit PAR levels. Reports problems to unit manager in a timely manner
    13. Communicates with RN throughout the shift, establishing time frames and priorities to facilitate patient care and movement through the system; notifies appropriate departments of patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
    14. Assures use of universal precautions.
    15. Seeks and supports opportunities for professional growth and development.
    16. Answers telephones and intercoms; receives and conveys messages; places calls as requested.
    17. Communicates in a professional manner and demonstrates respect for patients/families/significant others and other health team members.
    18. Offers consistent and visible support and feedback to peers and staff. Applies principles of caring and healing in interactions with patients and families and with colleagues.
    19. Serves as coach and mentor for less experienced colleagues.
    20. Complies with all hospital rules and regulations. Strives to achieve excellence of service as identified through the UM Shore Regional Health values. Responds to UM Shore Regional Health emergency codes as appropriate.
    21. Responsible for honest behavior in all matters. To the best of the employee’s knowledge and understanding, complies with all Federal and State laws and regulations.
    22. Maintains the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information. Uses and discloses only that information which is necessary to perform the function of the job.
    23. Ensures accuracy in the medication process, including, transport, storage, and security of medication to include IV solutions.
    24. Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Must have corrected visual and aural acuity.
    • Must be able to read cardiac rhythms and possess knowledge of medical terms.
    • Minimum of one year of clerical/secretarial experience; preferably in a healthcare setting.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required and must be obtained within 90 days from date of hire.
