The Urban Institute Summer Internship is a paid 10 week program designed to provide students interested in research, public policy issues and organizational operations with rewarding and substantive work assignments that contribute to Urbans mission. How youll contribute: The Income and Benefits Policy Center is looking for full-time, temporary research assistants for the summer who are interested in researching the details of state welfare and child care subsidy programs. This is a paid position requiring a minimum of ten weeks of work. The Research Intern will continue previous work researching changes to welfare or child care assistance programs on one of two projects: The Welfare Rules Database (the WRD) or the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) Policies Database. The WRD serves as the primary source of information on state Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) policies, and the CCDF Policies Database is the most comprehensive source of state child care subsidy policies. Both databases generate publicly available information for use by federal agencies, state administrators, and researchers. Responsibilities include: * Interpreting state rules and regulations * Navigating state caseworker manuals * Communicating with state agency staff * Updating database information What youll bring: The successful candidate will: * Be pursuing a graduate degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Economics, or other related disciplines. Candidates who are either between their first and second year of graduate school or starting their first year with previous research experience are preferred. * Have an interest in TANF and/or CCDF policies * Possess strong organizational skills * Possess strong analytical skills * Be detail oriented * Work well independently * Have very strong Excel skills (including use of formulas) and, ideally, some familiarity with the concepts of Access databases * Preferably, have experience working with dense primary source materials such as statutes and/or administrative documents.
