Legal Internship: Housing Job Type: intern-fellowship Job Short Description: The fight for affordable housing in New York City has reached a major breaking point. Affordable housing is vanishing as landlords exploit a broken system, pushing out rent-regulated tenants and catapulting apartments into the free market The Safety Net Project (SNP) at the Urban Justice Center is seeking law school students who are looking to join the front lines of New York City's new Right to Counsel movement working with passionate and dedicated professionals in the fight against unchecked gentrification and unaffordable housing. The Safety Net Project provides free legal services to low and no-income households at legal clinics located at food pantries, soup kitchens, and community health centers throughout New York City. We advise, assist, and represent New York Citys most vulnerable members to minimize evictions, ensure tenants obtain necessary repairs to their apartments, and those eligible for crucial public benefits receive them. Job Summary & Qualifications: The Legal Intern will assist SNP's Housing Attorneys, who provide direct legal representation to tenants in the area of landlord-tenant law, including civil proceedings in NYC Housing Court, affirmative litigation and New York City Housing Authority Administrative (NYCHA) hearings and appeals. The Safety Net Project is looking for students who are currently enrolled in law school, or law school graduates looking for volunteer opportunities. Responsibilities: Legal interns will conduct legal research, perform legal writing, conduct intake, liaise between SNP staff and clients, and shadow our team in housing court.
