    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    UHG Ventures is pioneering a new category of venture capital. We are a business foundry; designing, starting up, and scaling businesses committed to driving disruptive, systemic change in the health care system. The UHG Ventures team operates as an independent fund of UnitedHealth Group while leveraging strategic dynamics to accelerate and advance investments. Our investments catalyze health care system changes that improve health outcomes, reduce medical costs, and create operating efficiencies for the health care system.

    As a UHG Corporate Ventures intern, you will work closely with C-suite executives of UHG Ventures' portfolio companies to support strategic growth initiatives and operational improvements, and with UHGV's management to participate in new business building. New business building activities include market research and analysis, financial analysis, business plan formation, and deployment planning. Work with portfolio companies includes analyzing, recommending and deploying strategic initiatives and operational improvements, and mitigating business risks. Candidates should be able to gather business information and synthesize it logically and analytically, and be able to effectively communicate the resulting new insights.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    During the course of the internship you will have a primary and secondary project involving a mix of existing portfolio company initiatives and new investment concepts. As discussed above, these projects encompass initiatives ranging from developing growth strategies, improving operations, and evaluating new investments. Working on these projects will require that you perform many if not all of the items listed below:

    • Develop end to end strategic recommendations and attainable plans of action for portfolio companies
    • Deliver clear, crisp, and comprehensive summaries of markets and associated opportunities and potential business plans
    • Take ownership of key business initiatives for portfolio companies and maintain flexibility with evolving business priorities
    • Develop relationships quickly with portfolio company executive management and outside parties to accomplish objectives
    • Support UHGV team with quantitative and qualitative market and financial analysis
    • Demonstrate resourcefulness in moving work forward; finding and harnessing resources, and meeting tight timelines
    • Manage ambiguity in terms of deliverables and scope that is inherent in building and growing new businesses

  • Qualifications

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
    • Currently pursuing an MBA from a top-tier program with a target graduation date no later than June 2021
    • Ability to work as a summer intern at the UHG location in Minnesota during the summer of 2020
    • Minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA
    • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization (F-1 students with practical training and candidates requiring H-1Bs, TNs, etc. will not be considered)

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • 2+ years of experience at an consulting firm or VC / PE firm
    • Ability to think creatively and comfort being hands-on in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Strong analytical, project management and problem solving skills
    • Possess advanced Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills
    • Ability to work collaboratively and diplomatically with external and internal constituents
    • Excellent business research skills
    • Demonstrated leadership, academic performance and intellectual curiosity
