    Job Description

    TITLE: STAFF ACCOUNTANT, SR. REPORTS TO: TRUST ACCOUNTING MANAGER

    FSLA: EXEMPT UNION: NBU

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The position has complete responsibility of financial information for assigned clients and Trust Funds by applying accounting principles to analyze financial information and prepare accurate financial reports within government deadlines, and handles complex accounting projects and tasks as assigned. In addition, functions as the department subject matter expert and reviewer in a defined financial accounting specialty area.

    KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Receive, verify and remit payment for vendor invoices.
    • Maintain appropriate balances in checking accounts to maximize the clients' investment income while minimizing bank charges.
    • Process month end closing, including the mailing of checks and reports.
    • Timely and accurate balancing of bank statements.
    • Monthly review of clients bank statements to ensure the timely:
    • Transfer of cash
    • Posting of deposits and charges to the general ledger
    • Detection of fraud or theft
    • Voiding/reissuing stale dated checks
    • Record journal entries to post activity from the custody accounts; reconcile custody statements to general ledger balance.
    • Timely transfer of money from the client's custody accounts to their checking accounts to meet the needs of the client.
    • Reconciliation of subsidiary ledgers to general ledger (examples: participant loans and accounts payable).
    • Record journal entries to record miscellaneous deposits and miscellaneous entries.
    • Execute wire transfers in accordance within established banking limits.
    • Review monthly financial statements.
    • Balance FICA, federal withholding and payroll taxes and make appropriate deposits.
    • Prepare and send disbursements letters.
    • Reconcile checking, savings and investments accounts.
    • Post journal entries to general ledger.
    • Prepare and distribute Trust financial statements and statistics.
    • File 941 and 945 forms, and insure 990 and 550 filings timely.
    • Pay and file Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC) premiums.
    • Ensure accounting files are current and in good order.
    • Review vendor invoices for accuracy and reasonableness.
    • Make daily/weekly money transfers as needed.
    • Reconcile batches, pending lists, etc., as directed.
    • Prepare CSM and consultant statistical reports.
    • Functions as the department subject matter expert in a defined financial accounting specialty area, including, but not limited to: taxes and tax balancing, accrual accounting and technical and software applications.
    • Acts as a resource for Client Services and management for complex accounting issues, and provides back-up to other staff on all Funds as needed.
    • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Requires Bachelor's Degree, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience
    • CPA Preferred
    • Minimum 5 years of accounting or related experience
    • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Exceptional customer service skills and ability to effectively interact with others at all levels
    • Read and comprehend detailed instructions, complex correspondence, and memos.
    • Demonstrated positive and self-confident attitude
    • Intermediate to advanced PC skills including Word and Excel;
    • Intermediate to advanced typing and 10-key calculator skills;
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • A self-starter with ability to work well independently
    • Previous experience with variety of accounting software
