    Posting Details Position Information Job Title Holistic Resources Management Apprenticeship Posting Number 201000421 Posting Type Regular Contract End Date Salary Range Hiring Range $14.00-$15.57 per hour Full Time or Part Time Full Time If Part Time, List Work Hours Position Summary Information Job Description Summary Under general supervision of the Ranch Director and daily supervision of the Ranch Operations Manager, each apprenticeship position will focus on supporting and maintaining Forestry, Livestock, Crops, or Watershed Management operations with additional support roles for Education and Research activities. Apprenticeship positions may or may not include working in the four focus areas based on Ranch related project needs and applicant strengths. Minimum Qualifications Bachelors of Science in field closely associated with forestry, livestock management, agriculture and natural resources management as needed for position needs. Emphasis areas can include forest management, agriculture, watershed management or range management, or closely related area of emphasis Knowledge of forestry, livestock, crops, or forestry operations, management, and research Additional knowledge of watershed and range management desired Knowledge of database and word processing computer software, such as Excel and Word Knowledge of GIS and capability to work independently in GIS mapping and analysis assignments Ability to correspond via email and memos Knowledge of scientific instrumentation for laboratory analysis and field investigations Good interpersonal skills for working cooperatively with visitors, volunteers, staff, students, faculty, county/state/federal agencies Good organizational skills and record keeping Ability to construct thorough professional and technical reports summarizing education and research activities related to agriculture Ability to identify and establish priorities Must have the ability to obtain a Class B California Drivers license within 6 months of hire Ability to participate in physically-demanding natural conditions Work independently on projects from conception through to the final product Communicate effectively and perform professionally in all settings Ability to operate two and four-wheel drive vehicles (including off-road travel) and ATV Ability to train students, faculty, staff and volunteers regarding use of this equipment Operate sophisticated scientific equipment A background check is required for all regular benefited positions The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment Preferred Qualifications Physical Demands Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone Dexterity of hands, fingers, and wrist to operate a computer keyboard and calculator Seeing to read a variety of materials Sitting or standing for extended period of time Physical agility to lift 50 pounds to shoulder height Physical agility to lift, carry, push, or pull objects Commuting on an as needed basis to outside meetings and training locations Typical Essential Functions Participates in all activities to meet Ranch goals Prepare written reports and provide other written documentation of activities as needed Actively engaged in milling operations for lumber products for facility building projects including the Swanton Pacific Educational Center and Field Camp Actively engaged in resource monitoring for water supply, groundwater wells, and water quality sampling and testing Perform road and trail maintenance that may include brush clearing for clearances and passage, drainage improvements that may include culverts, bridges, and road surface drainage structures Drive vehicles and farm equipment to provide transportation and to perform work tasks. Included vehicles are two and four-wheel drive on and off road ATVs Perform a wide variety of operational duties as needed. Duties including lifting and moving of items such as bales of hay, rolls of fencing materials, fence posts, research field equipment. These items will generally weigh 50 pounds or less Assist Cal Poly lab/class coordination and instruction on-site as it relates to education and research activities Provide and assist in ranch tours for visitors, classes, and outside groups. Develop GIS maps for education and research purposes Develop field tour itineraries. Assist in facility preparation for field trips, short courses, workshops, etc. This may include preparation of overnight facilities, faculty, or guests Perform other duties as required, including support for Ranch operations and facility and landscape work as needed Duties and Responsibilities may include focus in these areas: Forest Management: Actively engaged in forest management operations, Non-industrial Timber Management Plan compliance, forest inventory and associated office activities Livestock Management: Actively engaged in livestock operations, development of a Ranch Management Plan, rangeland inventory, and associated office activities Crops Management: Actively engaged in crops operations, development of an Agricultural Management Plan, ag land inventory, and associated office activities Watershed Management: Actively engaged in watershed management operations, support different land management activities thorough evaluating water use, water quality, and associated office activities Special Instructions to Applicants Cal Poly Corporation provides excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement, paid sick leave/vacation and holidays.
