Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Corporal, Sergeant, or the Lieutenant of Police, or the administrative superior in charge of the shift, the Dispatcher is responsible for sending, receiving, recording and disseminating information using a variety of police communications equipment (e.g. police radio, intercom, telephone, computer and cameras, among other equipment), and coordinating the overall Public Safety advisory and response system. The Dispatcher is responsible for making decisions based on established Public Safety Division policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Utilizes computer-oriented equipment, including Computer Aided Dispatch systems (CAD), to receive record, monitor, summarize and/or transmit the data relating to an emergency.
2. Receives, relays, and/or transmits routine and emergency calls to police, fire, and other public safety agencies and units. Monitors police and 911 calls as required.
3. Maintains a log of radio transmissions, telephone calls, and other pertinent information and facts and inputs the information into a computer.
4. Makes entries, inquiries, cancellations, modifications of the various data bases of the NCIC/SCIC. Sends and receives messages via NJLETS/NLETS. Receives and answers inquiries of the NCIC, SCIC, NJLETS, NLETS, and CJIS system for other agencies.
5. Maintains incident reports of complaints, and prepares and types a variety of reports.
6. Operates NCIC computer terminal to retrieve license registration information and criminal records.
7. Receives and transmits messages via the NCIC, SCIC, NJLETS, NLETS systems per established guidelines.
8. Acts as receptionist to in-person callers and assists them in contacting the appropriate Authority personnel in a timely manner.
9. Search digital media archives and locate media of evidential value for incidents. Prepare and log such evidence in accordance with evidence control policies
10. Trains assigned relief operators on the Dispatcher’s duties.
11. Deals with varied emergency situations and must expeditiously give assistance to callers frequently in a state of panic. The position holder is the one who makes the primary decision about whom to contact.
12. The position requires the individual to work a variety of shifts on a rotating basis, holidays and overtime as necessary
13. Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
14. This position is required to successfully complete state and federal mandated programs and refresher courses and also required to participate in reoccurring in-service training programs as ordered by the Police Chief.
15. Assists in maintaining a safe and secure work environment by participating in required training, recognizing and reporting hazards and suspicious activity, and using all required personal protective equipment.

Education and/or Experience

Required:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• Must be able to carry out orders with precision and speed.
• Must have the ability to make decisions quickly and accurately.
• Must have the ability to speak clearly and concisely.
• Must have the ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
• The employee will be required to work overtime for operational needs when necessary.
• Proficiency in relevant personal computer applications such as word processing and spreadsheet applications.

Preferred:

• 2 years police or emergency response dispatch.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit (85%). The employee is required to stand and walk (10%) and lift, climb, bend (5%). The employee must occasionally lift, hold, and carry objects up to 25 + pounds. Have normal day and night time vision, corrected or uncorrected. Have normal hearing, corrected or uncorrected. Must be able to perform all position functions. Must be able to physically operate all job related equipment to position functions. The employee must maintain a neat and clean appearance.
