    MAJOR FUNCTION: The Career/Technical Educator & GED Prep Specialist is a grant-funded position by the Florida Department of Correction (DOC) Gadsden Re-Entry Center (Quincy, FL). The Specialist’s major function is to prepare students for entry into one of the CTE programs at Gadsden Re-Entry whether it be Electrical or Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC). The Specialist will also administer some TABE/GED prep classes, as well as teach some GED or TABE preparation courses.  The Specialist may also work with the educational staff to assist students with an academic and career pathways plan. Primary duties will include, but are not limited to:

     

    • Assist student to increase their TABE or GED scores. Plan syllabi for the instruction for an Adult Education/GED Curriculum Frameworks including career and education planning. Identify print and online resources to support the Curriculum Frameworks. Coordinate and lead group presentations on study skills, time management, stress management, test taking, test anxiety, and other student success topics. Administer some TABE/GED prep classes to the offenders that are in the programs. Prepare students to receive the OSHA 10 as well as National Center for Construction Education Research (NCCER) Core Curricula for industry certifications.
    • Work with the student and the educational staff to assist students with a career pathways plan. Maintain a safe instructional environment.
    • Guide and advise students, particularly those with academic problems and recommend resources available to enhance student success. Stay current with Florida Department of Education technical assistance paper reports.
    • Complete paperwork, maintain records, including student, and assist with tracking of critical data elements. Access computer databases to review student test scores, complete lesson plans, class roosters, and accurate attendance records.
    • Attend and participate in staff meetings, attend and complete professional development training and attend other meetings on behalf of the project. Perform other duties as assigned.

     

    MINIMUM TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: An associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and three years of related instructional experience is required.  The bachelor’s degree is preferred and may substitute for two years of the required experience.  Experience teaching or instructing adult and non-traditional learners in a diversity of subject matter and settings is also preferred.  Former teaching experience and a current State of Florida Teacher’s Certificate from a Florida School District is also preferred. The bachelor’s degree in education or related field is desired.

     

    SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS WILL DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING: Knowledge of and experience with construction principles and applications. Knowledge of adult learning to effectively contribute to the development of course curriculum and lessons. Knowledge of teaching adult students and facilitating a rich learning environment for diverse populations. Knowledge of TCC and DOC policies and procedures. Knowledge of Florida Department of Education vocational frameworks. Excellent human relationship skills. Skilled in project management, organization of tasks and responsive follow-through. Ability to use MS Office applications and internet navigation. Basic graphic design experience using MS Word and PowerPoint. Ability to use teaching strategies that meet varying abilities of students. Ability to critically assess situations and make sound judgments. Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques. Ability to communicate course material to students in an effective manner. Ability to communicate effective, verbally and in writing. Ability to interact with other project and DOC staff appropriately. Ability to work independently or as a part of a team and make independent decisions. Ability to multi-task. Ability to keep accurate & thorough records. Ability to serve as an instructor responsible for preparing students for entry into one of the CTE programs at Gadsden Re-Entry whether it be Electrical or Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC).
