Go to CAPPS Recruit to Sign In Performs entry-level duties within a specific section of the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM). Selection will be determined by the section supervisors, based upon candidate's academic interest and qualifications. The internship program is developmental in nature, and is designed to enhance the intern's practical knowledge of emergency management programs and initiatives, in conjunction with an ongoing academic program. Formal an informal training will be provided. Work is performed under close supervision with limited latitude, after training, for the use of initiative and independent judgment within the limits of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. "No Military Occupational Specialty codes applicable." GENERAL DESCRIPTION Performs routine (journey-level) research work. Work involves performing specialized research projects pertaining to the administration and operations of Emergency Management and Homeland Security program functions of the agency. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES 1.Collects, compiles, and analyzes research data for use in the development of plans and operational procedures specific to emergency management and homeland security programs. 2.Uses statistical methods and relational databases to analyze data sets. 3.Prepares or assists with preparing reports of research findings and quantitative analysis projects. 4.Assist with planning, developing, coordinating, and administering research projects. 5.Assist with formulating research objectives, programs, and priorities. 6.Assist with the preparation and monitoring of performance measures, statistical modeling and predictive analysis. 7.Assist with authoring or editing technical reports and summaries of findings. 8.May assist in designing and creating computer programs for research applications. 9.Participation in activations or exercises of the State Operations Center (SOC). 10.Perform other duties as assigned. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS Education - Must currently be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university or graduated from an accredited college or university. Coursework in research methods and statistics is preferred. Undergraduates will have a GPA of 3.0 or greater, and have sixty (60) or more credit hours towards their degree (junior or senior status). Graduate students in good standing with their respective universities are eligible. (Copy of unofficial transcript MUST be attached to the application to be considered). Experience None. Licensure and/or Certification - Must possess a valid driver license and automobile insurance. Requisite within two weeks of temporary employment to complete the following courses: ICS-100, ICS-200, IS-700, IS-800 FEMA courses. Statistical and Research Analysis knowledge Working knowledge of statistical concepts and methods and their application to research analysis; of measurement, testing, and evaluation; and of research methods, principles, techniques, and philosophies. Familiarity in conducting qualitative and quantitative research, in the use of a computer and applicable software, and in using statistical tools and programs. Regulatory knowledge - Working knowledge of, or strong interest in emergency management and homeland security programs, concepts. The ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State, and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures. Analytical skills - Must be analytical, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task without sacrificing accuracy or timeliness. Ability to analyze problems, identify causative factors, and apply actions to effectively resolve current issues and prevent recurrences of problem conditions. Organizational skills - Must be organized, flexible, and able to prioritize in a multi-demand and constantly changing environment. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines without sacrificing accuracy or timeliness; ability to work independently; and to understand and effectively apply complex oral and written instructions and procedures. Computer systems / hardware / software Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and able to learn new software/systems as applicable to the position. Confidentiality and Protected Information Must demonstrate an ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations, and adhere to applicable laws/statutes/policies related to access, maintenance and dissemination of information. Safety Must be able to work in safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and must be able to comply with safety standards and best practices. Schedule Internship based on predetermined (spring, summer or fall semester) 4-6 month placement. Availability for after-hour and weekend work is required.
