Your Role and Responsibilities

Start and end dates for this Internship are during Summer 2022 (3 months) at IBM Research.

The MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab is a collaborative academic-industry partnership focused on advancing fundamental AI research. With over 60 active projects in our portfolio – each jointly executed by MIT faculty and IBM Research scientists – we publish in the top AI conferences and work with member companies to bridge our scientific work to real-world impact.

THE ADVANCED PROTOTYPING TEAM

We are a team of talented software engineers and designers tasked with harnessing the lab’s most innovative work to create prototype applications. This team will get to interact with some of the world’s leading AI researchers from MIT and IBM to forge pathways to powerful products and services for business and society.

We are looking for hackers, makers, and lifelong learners – people who love to code and care for the user experience.

This team will be co-located with our research group in Cambridge, Massachusetts in Kendall Square – one of the hottest technology hubs in the world.

The Software Engineer AI Intern, will implement and train deep learning models and create frameworks for our clients and end users. This person will work closely with an AI Engineer and backend team to make models scalable on our hybrid cloud systems and will work with the frontend team to make AI systems usable and understandable.

Candidate must be pursuing a Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related area.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

1. Background in one of the following:

• Machine learning related fields (e.g., CV or NLP)
• Software architecture
• Full stack development

2. Basic knowledge in one of the following:

• Deep learning models and methods (e.g., CNN, RL, Transformers, and GANs)
• Design patterns and software design
• React or Vue.js for full stack development

3. Experience programming in Python

4. Experience using TensorFlow or PyTorch to develop deep learning models

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

• Basic knowledge of software engineering practice (e.g., architecture and design patterns)
• Experience in writing unit tests
• Experience with working with DevOps tools
• Experience with containers and Kubernet
• Passionate about code and developing novel ideas
