Join the industry leader in Network and Telecommunications Services as we embark on transforming our nation's critical communications infrastructure and the FAA's National Airspace System (NAS) network. As a member of our FAA Enterprise Network Services (FENS) team, you will bring your passion, education and experience to this critical mission and interact directly with decision-makers and government staff who are tasked with ensuring the nation's air transportation system's underlying communications infrastructure is secure and always available.     As a Tier 2 Network Engineer, your primary responsibility is to ensure Verizon’s FENS NOC customer receives professional service and prompt response to their needs. You will be part of our 24x7 Tier2 NOC function for the Federal Aviation Administration – this means responding to escalated Incident Management tickets generated by automated monitoring/service desk calls, which require advanced engineer support in stewarding toward resolution, in support this high visibility customer. The position is full time – eight hours per day supporting our three shift 24x7 customer Network Operations Center from our Ashburn, VA, and Cary, NC, locations.

    • Technical Support: provide advanced support to our customers in all areas of network hardware and interconnection including routers, multiplexers, firewalls, hubs, bridges, gateways, etc. Evaluate, coordinate and perform approved change/reconfiguration. Support AND leverage Tier 3 Network Engineers for escalations, complex implementation, and during major network events.

    • Communication: the nature of these highly visible mission-critical networks means specialized notification and an all-hands-on-deck mentality. Interact with customers and vendor/partners via phone/bridge/email/ticketing while conducting advanced triage, leveraging onsite Points of Contact including customer or onsite / dispatched field engineers. Following best-practice methodology such as ITIL / ISO 9000, document work in systems such as Change Management and ticket/Incident Management systems, develop Standard Operating Procedures/Methods of Procedure.

    • Schedule Flexibility: while this position covers primary work hours coast-to-coast, this is a 24x7 program so scheduling may flex to support change/maintenance windows, implementations, and after-hours/on call support as needed.

    What we’re looking for...

    You’re tech savvy, and proficient in all things telecommunications. Working independently suits you well. You’re also detailed, vigilant, and on top of the details—someone people count on to solve problems and to make sure they don’t happen in the first place.

    You’ll need to have:

    • Associate’s degree or two or more years of work experience.

    • Three or more years experience in network operation/maintenance/design or related work in a large network environment.

    • Three or more years experience working with Cisco and other routing / switching hardware technologies, and network troubleshooting.

    • CCNA or similar certification.

    • Ability to obtain Public Trust Clearance.

    Even better if you have one or more of the following:

    • A four-year technical degree.

    • Additional Certifications such as CCNP.

    • Proficiency in at least one of the following areas: Data networking and communications, wireless technologies, digital communications, operating systems and applications, telecommunications, or power distribution.

    • Knowledge of data networking protocols including TCP/IP, OSI, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, BFD, SIP and other LAN/WAN protocols.

    • Knowledge of data transmission facilities such as 1G and 10G native Ethernet and Ethernet Backhaul.

    • ITIL v3/v4 Foundation certification and/or previous work in an ISO operating environment
