Job description
We are seeking a highly motivated intern to join our cutting-edge medical AI team at TCS Medical Robotics Center, TCS Hall on Carnegie Mellon University Campus, focusing on the development and implementation of advanced computer vision and machine learning solutions for medical imaging, surgical video analytics, and VR-assisted surgical training platforms. This role offers exceptional exposure to the intersection of artificial intelligence, medical technology, and immersive simulation systems.
Key Responsibilities
Medical Image & Video Analytics
Develop and optimize AI models for cancer prediction and detection from medical imaging data
Implement computer vision algorithms for blood spot detection and analysis in surgical videos
Create and refine landmark detection systems for anatomical structures and medical implants
Build monitoring systems for real-time analysis of surgical procedures and patient outcomes
Process and analyze large datasets of medical images and surgical videos
AI Model Development & Training
Design, train, and validate deep learning models using frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar
Implement image segmentation, object detection, and classification algorithms for medical applications
Optimize model performance for real-time processing and clinical deployment
Conduct data preprocessing, augmentation, and quality assurance for medical datasets
Perform model evaluation, validation, and performance metrics analysis
VR & Haptic Simulation Development
Develop VR-assisted surgical training simulations for procedures including lumbar puncture and other medical interventions
Integrate haptic feedback systems for realistic tactile simulation in medical training environments
Create immersive 3D environments for surgical skill development and assessment
Implement physics-based simulation systems for accurate procedural modeling
Design user interfaces and interaction systems for VR medical training platforms
Research & Development Support
Conduct literature review and stay current with latest developments in medical AI and surgical simulation
Assist in research methodology design and experimental protocol development
Support preparation of technical documentation, research papers, and patent applications
Collaborate with medical professionals to validate system accuracy and clinical relevance
Required Qualifications
Technical Skills
Strong programming proficiency in Python, with experience in machine learning libraries (scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenCV)
Solid understanding of computer vision techniques and image processing algorithms
Experience with medical imaging formats (DICOM, NIfTI) and associated tools
Knowledge of deep learning architectures (CNNs, RNNs, Transformers) and their applications
Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools (NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Jupyter)
Educational Background
Currently pursuing or recently completed degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Data Science, AI/ML, or related field
Relevant coursework in machine learning, computer vision, medical imaging, or biomedical signal processing
Strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, and linear algebra
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience with medical imaging analysis or healthcare AI applications
Knowledge of VR development platforms (Unity3D, Unreal Engine, OpenXR)
Experience with haptic development frameworks and hardware integration
Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and clinical workflows
Familiarity with regulatory requirements for medical device software (FDA guidelines, ISO standards)
Experience with cloud computing platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) for ML model deployment
Knowledge of medical image annotation tools and techniques
Previous research experience or publications in related fields
