Your Role and Responsibilities

Start and end dates for this Internship are during Summer 2021 (3 months). At IBM Research, we invent things that matter to the world. Today, we are pioneering the most promising and disruptive technologies that will transform industries and society, including the future of AI, Blockchain and Quantum Computing. We are driven to discover. With more than 3,000 researchers in 12 labs located across six continents, IBM Research is one of the world's largest and most influential corporate research labs.

We are seeking Research students with demonstrated interest and technical leadership potential in one or more of our focus areas. As part of the IBM Research team focused on the Future of Climate, you will work on applying the latest in AI, modeling and optimization techniques to technical solutions resulting in mitigation and adaptation of Climate Change. You will conduct world-class research on innovative technologies and solutions and publish in top-tier conferences and journals. Demonstrated communication skills and ability to work independently, as well as in a team, are highly desired traits.

You should have experience in one or more of the following skills:

• Cloud computing infrastructure, including cloud platform and programming models; cloud infrastructure services; APIs; containers; DevOps techniques; microservices Computing and data services, including emerging platforms (Spark, SQL/NoSQL, Blockchain)
• Artificial intelligence computing infrastructure, including deep learning platform and services, accelerated cognitive systems, accelerators interface architecture, compilers and programming models, co-designed hardware/software
• Distributed computing theory and application, systems; services technology, including service management, analytics, automation and orchestration, cognitive services Memory controller architecture, memory performance modeling, memory standards and interfaces, cache design, non-volatile memory, NAND flash
• Materials Science
• Computational Chemistry
• NLP

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

Advanced skills in AI/ML techniques/algorithms (e.g., Physics-informed Neural networks, Neuro-Symbolic AI, Deep Learning, Deep reinforcement learning) applied for

(i) downscaling climate models, (ii) seasonal climate predictions, (iii) predicting climate extremes across time and space, (iv) and climate risk impact assessment, (v) model calibration and uncertainty.

• Visualization techniques, tools and methodologies
• Pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

• Cloud computing infrastructure, including cloud platform and programming models; cloud infrastructure services; APIs; containers; DevOps techniques; microservices
